I'm proud to announce that I beat yet another V8 in a drag from zero. My friend just bought a '97 (I think that's the year) Lexus with what I'm told is a 300hp V8 in it. When we were hanging out last night, I told him we should go race and he readily agreed, thinking that I would be able to take him off the line. So we manage to catch a red light without any traffic in front of us and as the light is about to turn green I start to get my engine moving and jump off the clutch just as the light turns green.
Well, I end up sitting on the line for a second as my tires are squealing like crazy and then slowly start to take off as my tires squeal for what seemed like at least 5 seconds (couldn't tell cuz my adrenaline was pumping). It was a bad launch (I still kinda suck at manual) so even after the car was moving my tires were still spinning over like crazy, but I still managed to keep up with him off the line and kept a foot or two ahead of him all the way through first gear. I hit second gear and as I'm shifting his car starts to pull ahead (his car is automatic), but once I hit my stride in second I went from being half a foot back to another foot or two ahead. When we reach 55-60 mph I pull off the gas (we were on a 35mph road so I wanted to play it safe...) and I take the time to enjoy my victory.
Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of my car. My roommate had previously beaten an F150 with a 4.6 (I assume) in it, so overall it proves once again that anyone who doesn't give the V6 it's proper dues is an idiot. This car rocks!
Obviously both the F150 and the Lexus are a bit heavier than my own car, but for me this provides a good comeback when someone tells me I should have bought a V8.
The only mods I have are visual aside from a cold air intake, so I'm not running much more than stock in my '02 sixer. I haven't even tuned the car.
Anyway, just wanted to brag and remind everyone (of what they already know) that we can be proud of our love for the 'Six.
That new Camaro V6 has 300hp and many newer Jap V6s put out well over 300...c'mon Ford where's the beef?

Meh. Horsepower's just a number. If a V6 Camaro can solidly put a Mustang out to pasture, then that'll be disappointing. Otherwise, I'm not too concerned about what numbers mean over actual real world performance.
Can I just say how happy I am that I started this discussion. Let's see:
One comment about how someone magically knows that this race "doesn't say much about either car", despite that this person has no idea how quickly we ran this apparently 1/8th mile run. And then three comments discussing how maybe somewhere down the line a V6 Mustang will maybe some day have some beef and be worth owning.
This thread is full of smug, which is - I guess - my fault for starting a thread with a title that insults V6ers in an ironic manner. Maybe I inadvertantly insulted V8 owners? I don't know.
Either way, in the interest of honesty, I'd just like to point out that at least a couple of you guys are a**holes. I'm looking at you, 2Manystangs and you too, First5.0.
ford is taking a 3.7 from their lincoln car and putting it in the mustang then they are going to put direct injection in it making over 300 hp and for the v8 i heard they going to make a bigger engine not sure of the specs that can make 400 something to compete with the camaro
ya i totaly agree hp isnt everything, but do a real comparision the 2000ish v6 mustang vs a 2000ish v6 camaro, the stang wins every time. i hate the classic "put a V8 in it" typical big head who thinks 8 is always better than 6 and thinks that you cant make a v6 fast, well thats just BS. hopefully one day i can show up at the track in just another "slow" V6 and put all the "i think my cars fast just because it has 8 cylinders" guys to shame i say keep on making your sixer faster and maybe one day the will realize

However I own both, and have owned more then one of each. My personal preference and route is with a V8, and someday I will probably put a V8 in my 01. Most the V6 guys throw duals and an intake on, and then go after bone stock cars and brag about beating them. Very few take the time to do what needs to be done to make one respectably fast.
I would say 8-9 times out of 10, if someone in their V6 Mustang rolls up on a V8 or other performance car with equal mods, they're going to get wasted, as long as the driver is not horrible.
I held off a 350Z stick car with my 01 V6 about 3/4 way down the track, then he blew by me, thats becuase he couldn't drive, not because my car was fast, lol
V6's can haul ass, just look at Tom's and his boy's cars, they haul ass. But they've got some time and work into those rides, not your average V6 stang you would see around town.
Irish, congrats on the win man, but chill out......

2manystangs is a flat out troll, dont pay attention to him...
however, First5.0 has a point, you say the race ended when you got up to around 55-60mph, which is in fact less than an 1/8th mile. it was more like the 330ft. it's just not a good comparison of 2 cars' performance. i mean, technically a street race isnt an official race anyway so it's not real important. either way you should be happy you're enjoying your car. but in the end, e/t's and mph's are the numbers that matter.

Yeah. I just switched from a straight day schedule at work to working 12 hour mid shifts so I've only been catching a few hours of sleep here or there.

Be that as it may, the race really only established what we already assumed would be the case: I would take him off the line, but if we raced from a roll on the freeway (or decided to take it up to quarter mile speeds) the tables would have turned. And it was a good comparison as far as we were concerned - both of us just wanted to get a quick idea of how our cars would drag without getting our licenses revoked.
So, point taken, and sorry, First, that I blew up like that for no good reason.
agreed...should have went up to at least 90mph (but not in a 35mph speed zone )
There's a local street racing hot spot at some gas station near the freeway in my city. The freeway has sections with 70+ mph zones. I'd love to do a drag up to 90 or so. If I can get a good launch and shift right, I think it would be a pretty close race (not too confident I'd take him on this one, though).
The way I launched my car in the short drag was strange though. I've tried to squeal the tires on my car a while back just to see what it can do, but I've never spun them for more than a second, and in any case once the car was moving the tires already had a good grip. However, in this race they were spinning for what seemed like 5 seconds (probably closer to 2 or maybe 3 at most), but they kept spinning even when my car was moving. The only difference was the cold air intake, so I'm wondering if it really was able to add that much power.
Has anyone else noticed that much of a difference after installing a CAI?
