Default What is the Legality of Aftermarket Exhaust in Canada?

Hey Guys,

Just wondering if any one from up here in Canada has gotten any after market exhaust on their V6's?

Asking this since anything up here after market is technically illegal. I am thinking about doing some sort of duel exhaust on the V6 to replace the ugly OEM one but the laws here are making me think twice. Not looking for alarm causing loud, just a little louder then stock with duels. No louder then a stock V8 for example.

The laws up here state for those who don't live here:

Mufflers

61(1) A propelled by an internal combustion engine must have an exhaust muffler that is cooling and expelling the exhaust gases from the engine without excessive noise and without producing flames or sparks.

(2) A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine if the exhaust outlet of the muffler has been widened.

(3) A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine if a device is attached to the exhaust system or the muffler that increases the noise made by the expulsion of gases from the engine or allows a flame to be ignited from the exhaust system.

Don't want to be pulled over and fined $150 or what ever it is but would like an after market exhaust :p Though almost anything aftermarket is technically "illegal".

Any one here in canada have any advice?

I would assume you could do this in Canada like you can here. Find one of the gas stations cops hang out at, keep a look out for a friendly looking officer, and simply ask what is legal. Make sure you take a note of his name, and then in the event you do get pulled over you can say on April 6, 2010 Officer Blue told me XYZ and it won't be an issue. That is in court though.

I'd have problems believing that you can't slap some flowmasters on there. Those laws may be fairly dated. Like our laws here in Missouri revolve around the muscle car era. Those laws may be the same and have little to do with the modern interpretation of cars.

Upon reading the laws a little more carefully, it would seem that you can change out your muffler, just can't put anything weird behind it like those bizzare whistle tips. And as far as excessively loud goes, that's open to interpretation sadly. But if you go with the likes of flows or borlas they have a fairly mild idle on a V6. I would keep it as true duals though, seems a cross pipe may get you in trouble just reading that stuff.

Illegal? Definitely not in Ontario since it seems that even no mufflers barely wakes up the cops here. You are reading too much into those laws. Just don't run open exhaust and you'll be fine.

Actually this is a some what new law with them wanting even stricter ones. I think lots of this is due to the loud motorcycles but covers all veichles.

Here is a new article from March about them wanting stricter laws than this.

CBC News - Edmonton - New rules needed for vehicle noise: police

Still un-decided if its worth it or not, every $150 ticket could be going to something else, lol!

I can only dream of a law like this in Ontario. I am completely sick and tired of these retards on their harley penisons riding through town in first gear showing us how cool they are. It's beyond stupidity. If only the cops around here cared....
