Well there's many ways to break an engine. You can run it without oil, over rev it, put coolant in the oil, run the motor too lean which causes you to detonate the motor... The list goes on.

But if you want to know how to break in a motor, I'll tell you. Basically be easy on motor for the first couple hundred miles. That's it.

Never heard of "engine breaking" I am going to delete your post in the V6 tech. Double posts are against our AUP policy.

In simple terms it is to slow the car down with the engine. When you let off the gas and transmission is still in gear the car will slow down faster than with just sticking it in neutral. Also downshifting is similar. Works the same in an automatic. Lower gears for going down a hill at a slow rate of speed. Don't remember if the driver's license book talks about this or not.

I would not do this in the snow unless you want to look at the grill of the car that is behind you. Because you're rear end will come around on you so fast that you wont know what happened. Ofcourse if you are going down hill at a snail's pace it wont matter if you are in a low gear or not.

Hmmmm......I guess it would be called Engine "BRAKING" then, right? Sometimes I do it if I'm suddenly coming on a quick stop and my brakes either just want do it fast enough......or I'm afraid my brakes will lock up. If you do it properly in conjunction with your brakes, I can see how it might be beneficial in the snow or rain.

I've learned to read thru the spelling. If it was a joke, then shame on me for getting burned.lol

I agree though. If done correctly in the snow it will help. But it's best shown to someone then talked or read to.

Ya... If it was spelled right, I might have gotten it the first time.

Well, both of you got it right. If you downshift into a low gear you will over rev and "break" your engine.

If you do it wrong, I'm sure you would "break" your engine. I'm not saying to drop it into second gear while going 50 mph. But if you're going 20 mph in third gear, that's going to be around 1500 RPM's. Then if you ease it down to second gear, that will raise it up to around 2500 RPM's which in conjuction with your brakes will help stop the car faster without having to slam the brakes and lock them up in the rain or snow. Is that going to break your engine? I'd rather do that a couple times in emergency situations than slide into the back of someone.

by the way, I might be slightly off in my RPM figures....but the general idea is still there
