If i was going 70 and turned the overdrive off, would it damage the transmission?
No, the computer will stop you from damaging the transmission.
When you step on the throttle, it will take you out of OD anyway.
but no it won't hurt if you take it out in prep for a pass.

One time I was approaching 100 mph when I noticed my OD was off! I hadn't looked at my rpm's but I figured it was probably around 4000 or so. I don't think that's very good for an extended period of time.....

Yeah I once drove a buddy's Mitsubishi Lancer (I think) There was a very funny story behind this...I actually got my car stuck in a garage. They were doing work in our garage under our building at our office...Well we work 12 hour shifts and keep our office open 24 hours a day and don't always communicate so well with the rest of the staff...They were always changing what floor of the garage it was ok to park on. Well I parked my car (thank god it wasn't my Mustang!!!) on the "supposedly OK floor" and came out in the morning to find it blocked in completely. There wasn't much of the floor leading to the exit but steel concrete reinforcers and a little bit of concrete. Not wanting to wait for the building engineers to come in, I drove my buddies car home...I got a call later and they said he could try to drive it out, but they couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't fall through to the next floor. Either that or it would be stuck there for two weeks. LOL I told him to drive it out if he was comfortable with it.
Anyways a long story short, he told me to leave the OD off on his lancer...I was like, well I am taking the Parkway home, probably gonna go over fifty, do you care? He said no he always leaves it off. This struck me as strange, but I didn't say anything he was nice enough to let me borrow his car. Seemed like his engine was working pretty hard though...Oh well.

I don't know a whole lot but if the od button just turns off 4th gear tha'd just shift you down to 3rd. And if your going 70 and hit the gas it will downshift anyway wouldn't it?
