Default Overdrive Question

I have a 02 V6 auto. Most of the time when I am tooling around DC/MD I leave the overdrive on, but would it be advantageous to turn it off when the Nasty Honda with the Fart Cannon (well hell the other day it was a Mini Cooper...) pulls up next to you at the light and is looking to race? I dunno if it makes a difference or not...just wondering.

PS: The Mini Cooper caught me a little off guard, so we kept up at the start...but once I got going...seeya!

PSS: I only do it when I am "provoked"...

I drive overdrive off intown because you don't really need it from 0-50 mph but after that turn it on. will it do anything different? I dunno try it out, it's basically justa 4th gear. only use it on the highways. or if you go above 50. don't need it for cruisn nice win btw

mustanghuggy, first let me apologize for mustangdewds' lack of manners and secondly welcome to the site.

i'm not sure if it works the same on all cars but the camry i used to drive had an overdrive button. when you had it off the acceleration was noticably quicker. when it was on, every gear would be in od. but even with it off i would still reach top gear at highway speed. the od button would lower my rpms even more.

Just don't try this with the ones with the funny looking scoop up front and the red S on the side.

What year was it? I've got a '91 V6 DX, and it has the overdrive button which just locks the od out, no gain in accel. It also has an ECT button that changes the timing and fuel curve, and has dramatic change in accel.

i think it was an '89, but acceleration was faster with the od off. the button was on the shifter. no air/fuel button though.

Maybe the earlier models combined the two, or used a W.O.T. program like Ford does. I'll say one thing about the Camary I have, the engineering that went into this car is awesome. It seems like everything I've ever had to work on was accessible without having to remove several parts to get to it. And there always seems to be just enough room to get to the fasteners and remove and replace the part.

My understanding is that it will only make a difference when it would naturally go into OD. THe computer keeps OD locked out when it senses WOT.

On this one I could be wrong, but I didn't sense any difference in my 98 when OD was on or off.

i think all companies make the od feature different.

and as far as the camry, i blew up the engine before i had a chance to work on the car. then my dad got it fixed and then it got stolen

If i was going 70 and turned the overdrive off, would it damage the transmission?
