I had a 1994 Chevy Silverado as my first vehicle, my father gave me $5000 for my 16th birthday to get a car and my neighbor happened to be selling the truck for 5500, we settled at 5000 and i had my first truck. Around January of this year I put the truck up for sale and started looking for a car, I was planning to buy the car on my own with the money from the truck and what little i had saved up. After a few months of looking my father suggested we should go to the A.C. Collins ford dealership to look at mustangs ( I knew their prices were going to be out of my range but it doesn't hurt to look). The sales men were like vultures and swooped in to get their prey. Turns out they had a 2000 v6 mustang that the salesman just knew i had to have. I don't know why i let it even go that far because i was really looking for a manual transmission and this one was an automatic. Since the car was still out of my range my dad decides to help pay for the car, in the end they took my truck and about another $5000 dollars out of my dads pocket. Now just typing this makes me feel even worse. I knew i wanted a manual, i heard about how fun they were to drive and i wanted to see for myself, i don't know why but i let my dad do it. It's a black 2000 mustang with over 74000 miles on it when we left the dealership. 74000 miles in 4 years is pretty high, about 18500 miles a year. The cost value was about $9500 or more. I really like the car but i feel like i'm missing out with the transmission, and i feel like a jerk for letting my dad put so much money into it. I just feel like it was stupid to go into the dealership and buy something so fast, i know we could have gotten a MUCH better deal if we would have kept looking. The car is great, but i feel like we acted too soon and bought the wrong car.

listen man, this is what dad's do they like to see their kid in a mustang it's a kids car, the king of kids cars. My dad decided i should get a mustang and helped me out even when I was in my accident he payed for parts and we fixed my car together instead of totalling it and buying a camry or someting. when you get to college if you havent yet
you'll see your dad is always lookin out for you
give you lil cash sometimes.
the way I see it. your mom is for the first 16-17 yeras and your dad steps in when you get a car and out on your own.
don't feel bad just return with pride you obviously seem to love the car and are devoted to it and I bet that makes your dad really happy. I know kids who have their dads buy them 70,000 mercedes and tell their dad they hate it and want something else. just stay devoted and appreciate the help and gift you find this out when you get there
And your Dad would probably enjoy working that with you.
I am just glad that I have 14 more years until my sone is old enough to do this.
But hopefully he and I can build a car together for him!
Good bonding time!!
I have. but I don't pay for labor, so it wasn't feasible. and my car has no pint to be worked on anymore. just fixing last kinks and sadly selling it hopefully for an 05 05 Red GT 5 spd. leased.
I am 17 now, just starting my senior year in highschool. I read the posts about the tranny swap in the tech forums and everyone says it's not worth it but if i had the chance i would love to do it. On my old truck my dad and I spent a whole weekend just fixing it up with a little clearcoat on the lights and detailing it and it was the best weekend for both of us. But with college coming around the corner I feel bad for just about any money being spent. I do look forward to fixing up the stang though, and on that note - what are some relatively cheap things we could consider to do in a weekend?
Thanks for the replies, it really made me feel better.
I can get some pictures up when it stop raining over here. It's all stock except the exhaust but i still think it looks sweet.
Hey, I did the same thing with my Mustang . A week before I got the car if you had told me I would be gettting an auto V6 Mustang I would have told you you were crazy. But then I drove it. I traded in my car and had another 8 grand to finance (free and clear now) and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I love working on it, I love hearing the engine, I love everything about it. Hey, don't worry about the auto. I wouldn't get a stick in the Mustang, the clutch is super heavy, the shifter is vague and the clutch pedal, brake pedal and gas pedal are all at different heights. If you do any town driving, you'd probably start wishing you had the auto. No offense to stick guys of course, that's just my opinion. I usually prefer sticks. But when it comes to Mustangs, all sense of normalcy and rationality goes out the window. That's why it's an icon.
I think the first thing to do is lowering springs and an alignment. Great project do it yourself project (except alignment), about $250.
the clutch pedal isn't hard at all....and the fuel and clutch pedals can easily be adj. but that's beside the point.
2kv6, maybe in the future you can find a manual car. or you could always trade it in. anyway if you're not a true racing fan or are more of a looks kinda guy instead of performance the the auto is just for you. i drive the manual mainly cause it's fun. but once in a while, after a long day of work, i would wish i had and automatic...but the other 99% of the time i'm loving it. so don't feel bad...plus if you've never driven stick before, now wouldn't be the best time to learn...you know, burning clutches...besides you gotta save for college right. enjoy your car bro...i know the girls will. :thumbup
my father has worked at a ford dealership for over 30 years know. so hes always bringing something deiiferent home. well, when i was 16 i was really looking for a car. and i knew it had to be ford. so my dad comes home in a beautiful (it REALLY was) 1981 inline 6cyl. mustang. it was a very rare car. black exterior, TRX wheels(remember those),mint red leather interior, t-tops, power windows, 4 speed, hatchback. only 70,000 miles on it! he tells me he's just got it home so he could do some work on it. to make a long story short, he brought it home to see if i liked it. i ended up buying it off of the dealership (with paper route christmas tips and driveway shoveling money)for $575!. i found my first issue of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords at the local store and...that was it... i was hooked. we re-worked all the vacuum lines, changed the exhaust, better carb, new wheels, tinted windows,87 lx tail lights, painted the valve cover..etc...etc. 5 cars later (my last 4 and only 4 other cars have been 8cyl. stangs) im hooked on the stang bug....FOR LIFE! anyway,2K-v6, i guess my point is to enjoy it while you have it and if you enjoy it there will be many more ahead. hope you all enjoyed my story.

Hey 2kv6 dont sweat it man. You seem like you're really appreciative of the car, so dont feel like you wasted your dads money. Parents like to do things like that for their kids, especially the ones who are thankful. We can tell it means a lot to you, thats why you're so worried. In the future if you really want a man trans you'll get it, but for now enjoy the gift .
I do love the car, should be gettin some pics up in a couple days, just washed it and threw on some scratch remover and wax. I really like it and so does everyone who has seen it / ridden in it. They all say they are jealous
First of all, it's normal to have some degree of buyer's remorse when purchasing a big ticket item. Especially a first car. I had doubts about my 2000 black auto too, but decided in the end that it's the best car for me and my driving habits.
Secondly, consider the fact that you don't have to take your hand off your girlfriends leg while you're driving in order to shift.

Good call man. It's true, girls don't care wether you shift either. They don't even really know the difference. That car is going to get you some attention.
As for 74k miles, mine is a 2000 auto with 117k.
Have fun
