Default Performance Upgrades

Hey guys, great forum.
I havent owed a Mustang since I had a 68 Fastback in 1983. The kids are gone and the wife has given the green light to get one. I have searched this forum and there is great info, but I still need some help
I am leaning towards getting a 3.8, basically because I can get a convertible, for less than I can get a GT coupe.
What would you guys suggest as the best performance upgrades I could do to a v-6 and what would be the resulting performance increase..ie HP, sound etc. In other words, what would you do first...exhaust? Cold Air....ect...
I am strickly talking performance. I have a clear idea what I will do to the looks!
thanks in advance. I am pumped to be rejoining the Mustang family!

First, go to summitracing.com and order the dual exhaust. You'll need an h-pipe and a dual cat-back system.
Next, go to rpmoutlet.com and get gears and traction-lock for the rear axle. For an automatic, 4.11. For a 5-spd 3.73 or 3.55.
After that, go to supersixmotorsports.com and get the phase-3 system. This will allow you to have a totally N/A car with HP that exceeds most stock GT's.
Of course, you could always throw a centrifigual blower on there.

gears and trak-lok are cheaper at GEFracing.com

low-cost mods include K&N FIPKII CAI, and underdrivers from rpmoutlet.com.

what's your budget?

thanks for the feedback guys. Dual exhaust and the K&N will be first. I didnt think about gears. I will check into the cost for that. I will have about $1000 to sink into her right away. I believe I will put in the lowering kit and the duals first and go from there. There are a few exterior things I want to do.

I am hoping I wont regret getting a v6. I think with a few mods, I will enjoy the convertible/v6 combo. Its not like I am a young gun wanting to race every car I see. I just want to get this Stang sounding better, with a bit more punch to her. Any other suggestions would be great, I look forward to learning more from ya'll.

don't go over 2.25 inches on your exhaust.

with that much, go to RPMoutlet.com and pick up underdriver pulleys, Pick up a K&N FIPKII elsewhere . . .

How are you planning to lower your car?

I have no idea what an underdriver pulley is...could you please explain. Its been years since I messed with a car. I grew up with a street rod building dad...but never heard of a under driver pulley...

A place here in Nashville has Eibach Pro kit, a used set for $150. Seems like a good way to go to lower the car.

So, going to pick her up today! Think I will get a K&N FIPK 2 this week. Dual exhaust next and a few cosmetic things to start.

Also, what is a phase 3??

man I am pumped...its been a long wait to get another stang!

I have a V6 Mustang coupe and I love it. I have added the dual exhaust using Flow Masters, Under Drive pulleys, Diablo Super Chip, cold air intake with K&N filter, Steeda lowing springs, and bigger guage wires with the quad spark plugs. I have just recently finished paying off my stang and wanting to do more to it. I was looking at your suggestions regarding the gears. My question is which one would you recommend for me between the 3.73 or 3.55? And what does the traction-lock for the rear axle help in doing?

It's a smaller diameter crank pulley, it underdrives the accessories, reducing drag on the engine. the 3.8L is in service in a lot of vehicles, and some of them require electricity for AC plugs, AV systems, etc. It has a humongous pulley to drive the alternator, ps, etc.

Switching to a smaller pulley can net you as much as 17 hp, get you better gas mileage, and lengthen the life of your accessories.

stage 3 is a racing long block package for v6 engines

depends on your city/highway driving mix. (gears)

traction-lok allows you to drive both wheels, reducing wheelspin.

if you're almost exclusively city, go with 4.11s with an auto. exclusively hwy, stay stock. 3.73s are generally recommended, for manuals, city driving. 3.55 for someone with a lot of hwy driving but still wants something more off the line.

If you have an auto, you're either going to need a speed calibrator gear, if your car is pre-99, and a computer reflash if your car is 99+.
