Default Manual vs. Automatic

Me and my friend both have a 01 stock V6 stang, so of course we always race. I have a stick, and he's got the automatic. Most people tell me i should beat him everytime, which I don't. i can get him off the line, but while changing gears, he always catches me. I don't kno, maybe i jus suck at shifing... Does anyone have any good techniques or anything, that'll help me win, besides mods???

If you have a stock shifter an aftermarket unit will make the biggest improvement. When you shift try not to push the clutch all the way to the floor, you usually can shift by using only half or so of the pedal travel. Pushing it in all the way wastes time, try it going slow at first untill you get used to it.

don't lift when you shift.

you should be able to shift faster than the auto.

so leave your throttle floored, and shift as quickly as you can at redline.

IMHO, I think the auto has a one-up on the factory 5spd.
I've raced a couple of 5spds in my Auto, and every time I'm first off the line and I'm the first to the finish line. I think its just what your rpm is before you launch. With the auto I drop her into first at 2500 and then shift to second at about 5000. The shift from first to second is where I leave them in the dust. But idk... I'm kinda new to the whole mustang thing. Loved'em all my life but I just got mine in november.

If you're shifting the tranny manually, you're gonna damage it, and you're actually slower.

The design is VERY different than the C4-C6 transmissions that you could shift manually.

that's called power shifting and that can't be good for the trans...

Just holding down the gas and flinging through the gears possibly overrevving while passing over neutral and slamming into the next gear chirping gears rpms sing... It's good for trackers, but I wouldnt do it to my daily.

Not good for the clutch or synchros, but good for the soul!

when the hell did you become so reckless! LOL I love it.

I was driving my Dad's Alfa Romeo today. Fun getting behind the wheel of a Manual car. Of course I suck But I was banging gears, chirping them too, My dad hit me in the back of the head. haha.

Ah well, I really need a manual car.

I started out racing motorcycles on the plains of Kansas. My vice-principal in H.S. voted me most likely to die by age 25.

I used to do BMX-style sky maneuvers on my motorcycle. I learned how to shift on a dirt bike, so my approach is a bit different . . .

So what do you all think is the speed limit for each gear?
