****, i get 20 on a good tank, lately i've been getting 17-19mpg. which is bad seeing as how stangs are rated at 20 in city, 30 on highway right? i drive about 30/70 highway/city, even when i dont lead foot it my gas mileage is crap. anybody know what might be wrong? it was fine (21mpg) before i took it into the mechanics for the check engine light, they day i got it it started to burn more fuel than usual, everything sounds fine and there aren't any unusual smells, leaks, etc. any ideas?

actually they're rated at 27-8 highway, depending on tranny. you're making a little better power so you're getting better hwy mileage.

try spraying electrical contact cleaner on your MAF, disconnect the battery and reconnect. You can also run some injector cleaner through your fuel system.

Usually when my mileage goes down, it means I have a tire low, or I need to clean my air filter .. .

no computer electronics cleaner. you just spray it on the inside of the MAF.

A K&N is good for a couple of MPG.

I have a 2001 mustang v6 pretty much stock but a k&n air filter
and I get 27-28 miles per gallion, in town and highway. I get about 350
miles per tank just depending if I got my foot in it.

If you pick up the latest CD, you'll see how much brake and throttle use can affect mileage.

I brake by cruise control on the highway, and use the throttle sparingly. Before modding the car I got around 28-9 mpg, I get 35-6 on perfect days, now on 60-65 mph 2 lane roads, at 80mph+ I get around 30.

I dont get any less than 200 miles/tank... but I've never got any more than 240. I usually shift at around 2,000 rpm city, and maybe 3-3500 rpm when im accelerating onto the highway. I have seen a slight increase in mpg with the K&N intake.

If i were to drive just highway from full to empty, I could probably get around 300 miles/tank.

try 1600 RPM, and anticipate slowdowns without using your brakes.

I am curious - why would braking would cause less mpg?
Engine power to use the brakes leads to more gas being used?

Only exception to this would be 5th.
Can't go from 4th to 5th at 1600rpm, engine would almost stall - that would be like 35mph (or even less dont remember off the top of my head).

no, there are two reasons, paradoxically, when the engine slows down (if you have a mpg display on your car you will see this) your mileage increases by to near 100 mpg. I used to know the physics behind the phenomenon, but it's been 15 years since I've done anything with physics except a few differential equations now and then.

secondly, the energy goes into your brakes as heat. you then have to accelerate to reach your cruising speed, lowering your mileage.

Are you saying that applying the brakes causes them to heat up, which causes friction in your brakes - thus using more power to accelerate because of the friction?

If you're slowing down (either with brakes or coasting), you then have to accelerate again anyways to get to cruising speed - unless you are coasting into your driveway

no, no, the energy mpg you gain using engine deceleration gets transformed into heat.

You'll have to get in a car with an mpg monitor to see the difference.

if you anticipate stops using engine deceleration, and gentle acceleration, you conserve motion/energy.

If you step on the brakes hard, then have to accelerate hard to maintain momentum, you use a LOT more energy. the energy gets consumed by your brakes.

im realy shocked that most of your miles per tank is the same as mine...i get 200-250 per tank with 3.90 rears....now when the car was stock with 2.73 gears id get over 300 miles a tank (that was years ago i dont remember the exsact number) and im normaly not easy on the car at all

just kinda shocked me
