the Y on the flowmasters have a larger diameter. you generaly pick up 5-7 hp less than a true dual, properly sized. Not enough that you'd ever notice by the seat of your pants.

The tips are for sound quality and appearance. The wider and longer the tip the mellower the sound - that said, mufflers determine most of the sound. The tips are mainly for appearance.

I have true magna flows on mine. See if you can find a good muffler shop that can fab the pipes for you, and then use a real muffler. What they should do is cut the pipes right when it Ys, and turn that into an x-pipe. Flowmaster mufflers are rather loud and blarring. I have magnaflows, and they're a little deeper and not quite as loud, but their tone gets deeper with age; my dad has some on his lotus that he put on back in '99, and he says it's even deeper and more throaty now than when he first got them.
