could be solenoid/starter. If you don't have the test equipment, run it into NAPA or the dealership. You'll save money.

now would going to napa or the dealership would they test my car for free...to see what the problem is?
They may charge you for diagnostics, but it's a lot cheaper than buying an alternator you don't need.
Generally, at the dealership, if you go in for 3,000 mile service the diagnostics are free.

Alot of times I still do it the old fashioned way. Start the car, while it's running, disconnect the positive battery terminal. If it stays running it is the battery or the starter. If it stalls, it is the alternator. When you take off the terminal, and the alternator is no good, it doesn't have enough boost to keep the car running self-sufficiently. The place where you bought the battery can test to see if the battery is good or not. Just a less expensive way to narrow it down.

I'm too afraid of a surge blowing out my amp.

If anything, I'll shut the stereo off anyway. I have a matching Infinity Amp and 12" sub in the trunk along with the Mach 460, and don't want my amp to be the reason for the large draw. It sounds pretty good considering my only other option was to rip out all the amps and wiring, and start fresh. I will install the Infinity components next time around. They fit in the Mach enclosures and add more clarity to the highs. My Son did it in his '97 Stang, and you can tell the difference. Radio delete next time for the both of us.
