Default Odometer and trip stopped working...

Anyone had this problem? The speedometer works fine. The odometer and trip stopped working. There is a cable running from the back of the instrument panel that could be it. It runs underl the center console but I can't see it underneath. I'm gonna guess these 2 are still mechinacal. There is no speed sensor on the pumpkin like on my F250, but it looks like there is a geared magnetic pickup neat the tail shaft of the tranny on the drivers side. Only 2 wires.
I've got to dig around and see if I can find my manual somewhere.
Thanks,
Rob

The odo and trip are mechanical, theres a small array of gears inside the cluster, maybe one of those broke. The tranny sensor is digital (magneto pickup).

Thanks, I've been doing more searching and found the info on the gears inside the cluster. Seems to be a known problem near 90k. Thanks!

This happened to my 97 Mustang a week ago. Everything works EXCEPT the odometer and the trip odometer. The dealer says I need to replace the entire cluster, because the gears for the odometer broke. They said the plastic they're made of tends to get brittle and eventually break. The dealer wanted over $500 for the cluster.

I just ordered a cluster for a salvage dealer that Autozone works with, EverDrive, for $118.88 to include shipping to my house. It has a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty and takes about 5 business days to get delivered. The number on my receipt for them is 877-827-1188.

If you're not interested in that, then i have 2 other sites listed below for you.

Somewhere here or another site I located a guy that makes all these gears in him garage with an injection machine. About $25 or so.

Just found the link... Easy repair on a mustang.

This is a really easy repair, happened to my 97 mustang last week. Remove the headlight knob, depress keeper on bottom side with head lamp switch on and remove, two screws for cluster trim and four for cluster, rotate out bottom first and unplug bars on each side of back and the cluster is out. Pull out old gear and bits that WILL be present and drop in new one, got mine from fellow mentioned above, and reverse and job done.
