Default Slammed into a pot hole!! UGH!!

Hello -

We'll, if it wasn't enought that I had scratch the edge of a rim on the curb in a tight turn last fall, I nailed a pot hole a couple of weeks ago. I didn't even have time to check things out until yesterday and realized that I did some damage to both rims now on the right side of my car. I have the 17" Bullitts. My question is, the edge on both rims is bowed in about 2-3mm and 2-3 inches length along the edge. The rims do not seem to be damaged except for the edge. Also, since I waited so long to check, I will note that I have not noticed any difference in driving/handling/breaking at all. I am thinking that they are fine....thoughts? Also, can the edge be bent back/repaired? Thanks for the advice in advance.

Yeah, they can be repaired by a wheel shop. Ask your insurance adjuster for some digits. I wouldn't file a claim -it probably wouldn't meet the deductible anyway.

Considering the rims are $130 each, is it even going to be worth it?

Also as long as it looks like it is just the edge, this won't affect the car at all correct?

The pothole damage may not reveal itself until you're not able to hold air in the tires when it gets cold.

It usually costs $50 or so to straighten them out and refinish. So you'd save $80. (At least around here -don't know about your area . . .)

Anyone know of any places that fix rims around Mercer County, NJ?

Okay I found a place called Wheel Works in Burlington, NJ. Anyone use them? The guy said it could be $100 a rim to fix. I guess that is still better than the GEFRacing price of $129. I'm going to check them out on Friday.

Do you know if the process of heating the rim up and having it cool back down compromises the integrity of the rim at all?

Not if they do it correctly. It becomes brittle, for example, if you heat it, then dump it in cold water, but there is a heat treatment regimen for every metal to bring it back to the state it needs to be.

Call an insurance adjuster, and see if they recommend their work.

I got 1 rim fixed..the one with the bend and the road rash. They guy at Wheel Works in Burlington, NJ did an excellen job. The wheel looks brand new. It was a bit pricey, but he is a one man shop. It's still cheaper than buying a new rim.
