So I guess its luck of the draw with these things huh? 2003 Mustang with a little over 36,000 miles. Does $280 for the part and $80 labor sound about right for this replacement?

Sounds about right, but you may be able to get a high output aftermarket alternator for the same price.

You can also save money for doing it yourself, and the prices sound good too me....

Okay car is purring like a kitten now. No horrible electrical smell. One weird thing though is that I remember when they switched the alternator on my wife's car 'cause of recall the radio stations were all gone. In my car all the stations are fine. Does this sound fishy? Did they not disconnect the battery therefore nothing reset?

That could be, or they simply wrote the stations and reset them . .. some shops would do that, -others divert power to another battery, I think through the cigarette lighter . .. for luxury cars with preset codes, driver seat memory, etc . ..

Well, one good thing did come out of this. If anyone remembers, I had posted a little while back asking about noisy air conditioner. It seemed as if my ac would make so much noise going on and off and you could feel the car vibrate. I had to turn the radio up louder to not hear it so much. Now with this new alternator in, I used the ac and it is pretty darn quiet. No vibrations or anything when it kicks on / off. I wonder if this had something to do with the alternator losing its umph or if the ac maybe killed the alternator. So after over $300 I'm a very happy camper. Oh and yes I was using it today when I didn't need to in NJ. I just cannot stand the wind blowing in my ear.
