Default Supercoupe Project II

My friend just slid his 1989 Thunderbird SC into a telephone pole the other day. I will be buying the whole car from him for $400. It has a automatic trans, still runs and drives. We just got snow this morning so without a rear window and qtr window it might be chilly!! HAHA. Im thinking of getting that and taking everything I would need, sell parts off of it, then drop it in a salvage yard!! I make my money back and some to rebuild it, then im happy...

Do you know what I all need to put a 89 motor into my 95?

If I have the complete motor will it just bolt right in?

Do I have to change some wiring harnesses?

What wires on the harness do I need to lengthen?
I know its like the MAF and some Injectors.

Do I need any computers?

What type of rear end is in the SC?
I know mines a 7.5 with 3.73's, not posi trac tho..

Where can I go to get my supercharger rebuilt and ported?

What differences are there form the 89 vs the 95 supercharger?
I've heard the 94/95 SC'c were better...

Does anyone know about the bottom end of the SC?
I know it has a forged crank and maybe some forged pistons.
What should I upgrade to? Does anyone know where to get a "milled" crank for a 3.8? I was just thinking of boring it 30 over and getting some h-beam rods and forged pistons.

KS you told me before the pre 94 motors were "good boat anchors" or I think it was you. Should I change the block?

It's been a long time for these q's, but I believe the block, etc, are the same, just bolt it in. You can either program your computer, or swap over the SC computer.

Best source is going to the the SuperCoupe Club of America, TCCOA. That's generally where I go for SC information anyway.

The place for porting the SC unit is Ford Thunderbird SC & Ford Lightning - Supercharger-Forced Induction Systems

The SC block is pretty sturdy, and it comes with a forged rotating assembly. I don't know how it was balanced, so be careful on the tranny, but I don't think there were any changes that way until 1999.

The 94-8 Mustang blocks were weak, not the SC engines.

that's a good strong engine as far as main caps and webbing -much stronger than pre-99 3.8L Mustang engines. You'll likely need the oil pan, pump, etc from your present car (if I remember correctly) you can either use the SC computer, but then you'd have to get rid of your PATS. It would be better to get a programmer and a dynotune.

You'll have to fab an intake from the fenderwell, but that's not hard.

the engine isn't that much stronger than a 99+ engine, though it has a lot more torque. You'll definitely want to pick up a girdle for your rear end.

There's been another recent thread re: the entire parts list recently, so check the archives.

its a really slow project.... i tore the motor down and sent the block into get bored 30 over and all the surfaces checked.... after that i plan on getting some forged pistons, and sticking with the forged crank and stock rods(i hear they are supposably forged). gasket match the heads and port the stock manifolds. gasket match the intake and getting the SC ported by mannySC. then maybe getting the IC tubes ported and a double IC... thatll be fun.... its just the basics... enough to get the motor in... then slowly get the other parts I want....

For that you'd need to pick up or fab a stud girdle . . .

well my plan is to replace the motor, then the gt 5 speed, i think you said they were exterenally the same. and a gt rear end... i dont remember i think its a 8.8... but anyways its awile down the road... its a slow process for me... i just lost my job so its been hard to do anything besides port the SC, or gasket match the heads and intake. but someday it will get done. when i get a job hehe

no, you'd need a girdle for the main caps. you'd probably need a rear girdle as well, but to run 26 psi on a pre 01, you'd need to buy or fab a girdle for the main caps to keep the crank in place. It would be good to have one on an 01+ as well . . .

Exactly. Measure twice, cut once.

i think so... it should have the same k member... i think the k member just changed in 98 to 99, but im pretty sure it woud work...

why are you just wondering because your going to put a different motor in??? or are you planning on somthing special like a twin turbo ....

i know the 01-04 3.8 blocks are the strongest out of all of them....

if I would have gotten my hands on a 01-04 block before i got mt SC motor i would have built that up instead.... still would have went with the m90 but thats just me!!!!
