A degreaser works fine.

You can have a body shop repaint it with urethane, but, otherwise it's a pretty harsh environment.

Could you technically just hose down your engine with degreased (clear of the pulley system, to clean the engine and bay?

Yea you can just hose it down... If you leave the pulleys on then you might get some noise...

I've used Simple Green to degrease an engine bay, it worked quite well and it was a lot cheaper than buying 10 cans of spray.

Just don't pull the trigger. High pressure washes and engine electronics don't get along very well.

I got that, but the original question was what to use with the engine REMOVED. He's got more visible surface area now and buying degreaser spray cans gets expensive. Spraying it down with Simple Green or even some type of liquid dish detergent is less expensive. Granted they don't cut through everything as effectively as the spray, just cheaper. You might need to go over it several times to get it looking as good as it can.

Guys,
Empty engine bays benefit from oven spray... As much as it sounds stupid, I got this tip from my wife and be damed if it doesn't work great!

Yep... Easy off.. I didn't believe it myself until I tried it. Wife, seems to be the brains in our outfit reasoned like this. Cooked on greasy in the oven = hot grease/oil on motor... Danged if she isn't right.

Be very careful with oven cleaner it can take paint off to if left on to long, also agree with KSCoyote, water(especially from a pressure washer) will almost certainly upset electronics, and could work out expensive. Best option is time and care clean everything by hand avoiding wiring etc. with anything damp
