Heading to the track for the first time, any suggestions?
My dad's friend has free passes to a local track. They have a "race anything" and a highschool night. I figured why not give it a go? I've never raced before. Any advice for a first timer? I have an automatic.
good luck man!! its loads of fun, im totally addicted now! As for advice i really dont have any for you cause ive only taken like 4 runs with my fathers car... dont worry he was there. Probably the only time i will have permission to beat the hell out of his car! hehe

My V6 is an auto and I generally launch at about 1800-2K RPM while power braking. Hold the brake down and give it gas to about that RPM range and when the lights turn green, floor it.
I can't remember my old track times, it's been almost a year, I think it was somewhere around 16 seconds.

Don't do burnouts with street tires. Go around the water box if you can. Have fun!!!!

If you wait for the 'green' light to leave you will lose the race. Leave on the last yellow. Also as said above don't do a burn out, it's a waste of rubber and stay out of the water box, drive around it. Put the car in drive and let it do all the shifting. In bracket racing you want to be consistant so try to do the same things every pass. Last is as the day goes on and it gets warmer you will slow down some then as it cools you will speed up so take those into account when setting your dial in.
Seeing as he's never raced before, he might not know how to run against the tree. It all depends on how they have the lights on the tree set. Sometime you pre-stage, stage, then all the yellows come one and then green. Sometimes the yellows are staggered to give you a better chance to anticipate the green.
The fastest I ran was a 11.8 @ 124mph on my MC. Would have gone faster, if a lighter rider was on it or if I weighed what I did 8+ years ago.
I did not start this thread but I see some good advice. I too am going to run my car at the track for the first time tommorow night. All I want to do is stay in one piece and do 100mph. I bought a helmet and a fire jacket so now it is time. The whole family is going should be interesting.

Well good luck Mick, and let us know how you made out. Are you going to Englishtown? I believe it used to be called Raceway Park, not sure if it still is.

Yeah, my reaction times really bite. I'm getting better at it. It takes awhile to learn to jump on it at the right time.
Hey KS, I traded my 18" rims on the GT for 16's. I would have to buy new tires for the back, and the offset on the 18's would make the front rub on the inner wheel well if you turned over 1/2 way. It was pissing me off, so now I have 16's with decent rubber all the way around with no rubbing.
when i run it at the track, i usually take the tire pressure down to about 17-20 psi

No Englishtown is down in central Jersey. I am going to Island drag way in Great Meadows N.J. They have a special on First Wed. of every month $10.00 to get in eat all the chicken barbecue you want and race as many times as you want till it gets dark. And from what I have been told it is not crowded either. Gate opens at 4pm.
