Hey everyone. I was wanting to see if anyone has used a K & N Tornado, and what the performance is gas mileage and performance wise. My wife and I drive 70+ miles a day just getting back and forth to work, and any help with gas mileage would be welcomed. If it inhibits the performance of the engine, I would just try to suck it up and pay for the gas. I have a 2004, with the 3.9 V6.
Also, some info on how to install it would be helpful also. I am very new to working on cars and I am a little nervous about messing my car up.
Any personal experience anyone has had would be very helpful.
Thanks
Charlie
Are you speaking of that little stainless steel or aluminum thing that goes into you intake tube? It's supposed to create a tornado effect on the air going into the intake, correct? K&N doesn't make that, it's another company that is trying to use their name. I have never heard anything good about those "tornados". It makes your intake whistle a little bit, but no performance gain & no increase in fuel economy.
I would definitely suggest getting a cold ait intake or at least a K&N air filter though. On my 97, with a CAI & K&N, I increase my fuel economy by 50miles per tank. I went from 250-300 miles on a full tank. On a long highway cruise, from San Antonio, TX to Knoxville, TN, I got 30MPG with the cruise control set at 70-75mph with the A/C on.
Thank you, I was a little skeptical about that. Which CAI would you suggest? There are so many out there, and I don't really know which one to get, any suggestions would be great.
Thanks
Charlie
Yea everything for the 3.8 will work on the 3.9 just fine.

Pick up a Demolet or a JLT plastic CAI - Less heat soak -especially in Tennessee.

The air isn't circulating long enough to matter with plastic vs. traditional metal.
Not true at all. Air has very little mass - laws of thermodynamics still apply.
Independent testing shows it to be true - by several sources including MMFF & 5.0.
I reckon you think all the pros icing the intakes are doing it for no reason?

I have a 3.8v6. I added a cold air intake kit from K&N, a flowmaster muffler and a tornado. My fuel economy increased with each addition. It went from about 27 to 31 with the flowmaster and cold air kit, also I could feel the power difference. It went up to 35mpg after I put the tornado on. I couldn't really tell a difference in power though but it did help my mileage.
If you want better mileage you might also want to think about under drive pulleys and maybe even a tuner. They will both bring up gas mileage

The tornado doesn't work. Watch Mythbusters. Yes Mythbusters!! One of the myths was about increasing MPG using several different kinds of products. The "tornado" (even though that's not what they called it) didn't do anything. if anything, a cold air intake will increase MPG because you'll be using a much more efficient air filter. Also, plastic tubing will transfer less heat to the incoming air then metal tubing (like KS said).
If you are somewhat handy, you could go to a Lowe's or Menards, buy PVC piping and make your own Cold Air Intake. All you would need to do is direct your air filter into your fenderwell and you're all set.

Like 96 said, I used a few pieces of pvc and a K&N that I bought and it all cost me about 68 bucks. You can take measurments of how big you want the air filter inlet to be how wide at the base and how long and you can go onto knfilters.com and find a universal filter of almost any size. I had to order it from another website, but you can get the part number off of K&N. It was on my bros pontiac or I would give you the part number.
