Hey everybody this is my first thread.I've been checking on this site for a few weeks. I got a stock 1995 v6 convertible automatic except rims, stereo & CAI. My dad is a mechanic so I know I a lil bout cars not too much. Hes a die hard chevy fan he has a 72 nova w/327 small block w/388 RHWP 11.88 1/4 miles. his advice to me was sell it and buy a camaro Z28. What should be my first mods and do them in any specific order? Everyone seems to have CAI, UDP's and exhaust. I've been seriously thinking bout gettin UDP's and a turbonator.? they claim up to 35hp but even 10-20 hp for $70 is good right? 3.73 gears, A set of lowering springs for my chome 18"s (the car sits kinda high). stage 2+ powerpack $pricey$.? Bigger MAF and throttle body. GT takeoff rear sway bar? I read that,"it totally transforms the car". Also read that intake is the most restrictive part so i dont really want to do exhaust if it wont help power wise plus im kinda broke. I dont plan on forced induction. need some MORE power. My budget for my car is about $200-$300/month My goal is to stomp or at least give a Z28 and my boys stock SRT-4 neon a run for the money. Sorry so long but thanx in advance.

If you're broke, then there's really nothing you can do to match a Z28. Go to your local junkyards and pray for a T-Bird supercoupe engine swap or the odd turbocharger that you could throw in. If all you want to do is show up your friends, just throw on the bottle (nitrous oxide). I'm still not sure you'd win the z28 race... Even when they detuned it in 98 they rated it at a conservative 305hp.

Of the mods you listed the turbonator is extremely useless and the throttle body is only good with forced air.
95 v6 + vert + auto = bad platform
I know you hate to hear this but it is the truth. To make that v6 capable of laying down some power it would take easily over $5000 and forced air induction; that is of course if you want it daily driveable, cause if you wanted the car solely for racing then you could strip it down and turn it into a shell. Remove the back seat, remove the ac, remove the power seat on drivers side, remove power windows, remove spare tire, etc. Even then it would take some significant work to make it compete with an Z28. Now if you had a 99+ v6 coupe 5-speed you might have something to work with, but still a low budget is just not going to cut it.

the best power you could make with that kind of budget is at most 170 HP with just bolt-ons. Even then, that's overestimating. You're going to need to save up and invest on some big mods if you want power. On a straight line, a Z28 is a little faster of the mark than a GT so to compete you'll need intake and head work at the minimum and should consider forced induction. save up for a bit and get some good parts.

I don't think a Z28 makes that much power. My brother's 96 SS made 325.

I'm talking factory rating on the engine, not the RWHP. Actually, that year Chevy underrated it's Z28 engine because in reality it came closer to the Corvette's hp than GM liked to admit at the time. The same year SS (1998) rated at 320hp stock.
How many miles are on the car and how long do you plan to keep it? Even on built motors running a lot of boost tends to make the lifespan a lot shorter. Considering your budget I'd say you should start off with mods to make the car be able to handle more power. Stiffen the frame (strut tower brace and subframe connectors), strengthen the rear end(detroit true-trac posi trac, and T/A rear end girdle), and stronger clutch. If you start building a lot of power without paying attention to theses things you will have a lot of things breaking quick.

BTW, 18" rims is like having anchors attached to your tires. The stock 16" size would make you faster for now, going wider is only nessecary if you can make a lot of torque.

You're going to need to do a lot of fabbing to make that run - a low buck solution would be to take one off a cummins turbodiesel with low miles.
What year & what stage SRT-4?
if it's low bucks you're after - PM Pinto, and ask for the link to his low buck N20 approach. He's running an 12 sec car with around $1200 invested (if I remember correctly).
get the parts list, and start running e-bay searches weekly for the parts you need, -since your dad's a mechanic, you don't have to worry much about tools & shop time.

Eh, my dad said the same thing 20 years ago, when the 302 was considered a slug.
