Exclamation 2001 Mustang 3.8 V6, Needs Advice On Repairs And Performance Parts

i just purchased a 2001 3.8 mustang v6, it has a few issues here and there, i have a cracked exhaust manifold due to the a\c dripping onto it, and when you try to shift into 5th gear it grinds bad which could be the syncros?, also my clutch has a vibration when it idles or when you disengage the clutch maybe the clutch fork?, and i guess rocks or something is trapped inbetween the cats because theres a rattleing sound coming from the front left and right ones, and i don't know if its due to the exhaust manifold being cracked or not but my car runs rough when at idle and when i try to get on it a little it kinda hops and skips then it gets up and goes, when i take off slow it doesn't do it as bad.

anyways for the performance questions, if i decide to replace the cracked exhaust manifold, whats a good set of headers to go with, i looked into bbk shorty headers either ceramic or chrome, also replacing the factory exhaust and cats with a full exhaust from the headers back, i want to do either a bassani bx or ss kit, and whatever type of pipes is best h or x pipe, and for the cats, would some mini cats do the trick or what would be best?, as far as any other performance, if its the syncros in my 5th gear going out and clutch fork making clutch vibration, should i have it rebuilt or buy a new tranny, anyways for the simple question, what grade and weight of motor oil should i use, i've used royal purple in alot of my performance cars, and mobile 1 full synthetic for a performance import i used to have, anyways thanks for any answers anyone may have to my questions, i'm pretty much gonna have more questions about my stang since i''ve never owned one before so its all new to me, and any other suggestions would be appreciated thnx

My car has the same problem between 4th and 5th. I've been dealing with it for a year now. It's the synchros. The vibration sounds like your pilot bearing is shot. Replace the clutch and you should get a new bearing in the kit. Rattling sounds usually come from the cats or something loose on your exhaust.

Oils are based on preference. I run synthetic in my rides.......

so i guess putting some headers and a full exhaust kit would take care of a few issues, and the syncros i guess would have to be replaced in a tranny rebuild or either get a replacement tranny, which then i'd get an upgraded clutch system to take care of the other issue, either way these problems are annoying for the most, and i'm guessing my fuel economy would be alot better by replacing those parts, then i'd restore some lost performance, anyways thanks for the advice, if anyone else has anything for me i'd appreciate it, thanks oh an btw i guess i'll continue using royal purple fluids as i have in most of my vehicles.

Yeah, it would need to go to the tranny shop for repair, or take it to the local speed shop. Most of the guys either work on them or know some good guys who will for cheap. I'm not worried about mine because I have another Mustang, and with the guys around here, we could find a T5 in no time.

nice on the 86 stang, i had a buddy get one of those, i'll give em props, anyways i'll have to get it fixed, its a daily driver for now since i had to get rid of my 05 silverado, that was costin me 450 a month plus the insurance and i still owed like 19 grand on it, and i also missed drivin a car, more fun anyways.... and 5 grand is a helluva lot cheaper than 19 lol, oh btw what does your 01 stang run on the quarter and 0-60, i also planned on gettin a tuner, i had a hypertech power programmer 3 in my truck and it did good things for it, anyways does your tuner show a big difference in your 01? and i know they shut down at 115mph so whats the best top speed you've reached with it programmed, and if it does better than 120 would i have to get a gauge that would read higher numbers? thanks for the info.. helps a bunch

If your planning on building up your mustang and adding PA's i'd suggest getting long tube headers, im pretty sure MAC's the only place that offers long's tho. The guys on this site are great tho. and really know what their talking about so have fun with your new stang and try killing some V8's

Thanks, it will get painted sometime this Winter, but we have shine1stangs project going too. I hover right around the 15.00's on my V6. I don't have gears yet, but they are on the list of projects to get done. Yeah, put that on our list of projects too. Damn!!!! My programmer netted me an additional 20rwhp along with the dynotune because we worked the fuel maps and timing a bit. My speed limiter is at 250mph, and my rev limiter was bumped up to 7k. I don't worry about top speed, because the only time I would really speed is at the track or just to clean it out a little.

You revved it to 7k? Wouldn't that burn ur engine up considering it redlines after 5k rpm?

yea i'll definately look into the long tubes.. i've heard good things about bbk but i don't think they have long.. anyways yea good to see that theres people that actually believe in v6s lol most of the time they tell you to run and spend some big money on a cobra.. but hell by the time the insurance gets me i'd be broke...

oh yea good stuff definately send me some pix when you get it painted... JDixon22x@aol.com.. my wife wants 5.0 fox body.. but i'm still tryin to train her on the manual lol shes impatient... and thats good results from you programmer, you mean 150mph on the speedo right? unless thats one helluva programmer lol, but not bad.. yea i'll end up taking it to the track when i get it done, i just like to mess around on the weekends at the local hang out, we usually just do some street races on a long stretch that doesn't get traffic, then show off some.. plus i wanna live to see my son turn 18 lol hes almost 2 months old now.. anyways thnx for the advice guys.. i'll let ya know what the progress is on the stang.. i plan on starting some work on it around the middle of oct if everything goes as planned

i doubt it would harm the engine unless he kept it at 7k for a while.. i know i was tryin to pass this car about a 2 weeks ago.. and this truck pulled out and was speedin head on for me.. i dropped from 4th to 3rd and was speeding up.. then i went to shift cause i was almost at the redline.. i messed up and shifted from 3rd into 2nd .. instead of 3rd into 4th... my tires started smoking and my car was kinda sliding side to side.. but within that second i poped it in 4th from 2nd.. so i know i had to be way past redline in 2nd gear for atleast 2 seconds... maybe 3.. all happend too quick lol.. i sound like a bad driver.. but i'm still gettin use to the cars stick... i drove an 05 silverado around for about a year n a half... and its a big difference in the clutch and stick... but i got my car checked right after all that happend.. no damage to anything.. i think i just put alot of pressure on my tranny and engine..

.... to comment on my car... i thought i got ripped off because of the repairs it needed... and how it was treated by the previous owner..which was a 16 year old who couldn't afford the notes... anyways... i think it feels alot better to restore something and build it up from stock.. especially a v6 stang .. when you can get it to hang with v8s with some work... so if any younger guys see this .. you definately need to take care of your rides... i'm only 22 but still i can't stand to see some young 15 16 year old kid get a new car or nice used car from daddys paycheck and run off and screw it up just because you got it for free.. and think you can just get another as easy.. if you cant take care of it .. let someone else do it for you.. sell it lol.. like the situation my car was in before i got it.. i think he tried to 4x4 it in the mud and i know this kid loved mc d's cause he had bags galore in the backseat ... well atleast he never went too fast in it.. since i showed him what it could do lol.. oh well fun stuff.. my life story there you go goodbye lol

No I don't rev it to 7k. On the dyno we need to find out where to hp starts to level off, so you bump up the rev limiter. It's kind of like the speed limiter, it's set at 250mph, but do you ever think I would see that speed?

Long tubes won't do anything either until you go with a power adder.

250... i doubt i'd wanna see that speed anyways lol, oh and i had my eye sety on bbk shorts maybe polished ceramic, first i gotta connect some kind of hose to where the A\C leaks out.. it was leaking onto the exhaust manifold on the passenger side and i guess over time it cracked it.. it how it was when i got it.. and i'm still stuck between the bx bassani exhaust system or the ss pro bassani.. bx system is like 175 bucks cheaper... i might goin head over heels but when i get everything built up i wanna think about a turbo or supercharger system.. that would be like a v6 cobra only cheaper insurance lol .. its just an idea though. that wouldn't be happening for a while atleast a year or two

Shiner, what kind of Hypertech programmer do you have? Could it give my 02 20rwhp?
