markwondi is right its all personal opinion or so called "Human Element".. I have flowmaster 40's and Straights with stock CATS on each side and I love my car even more.. They just cut the Y pipe and ran pipes back, welded on the Flowmaster 40's and I fired it up and got a little.. "happy".. There was deffinitly a noticble increase in Torque, so I can accelerate faster. I would recomend doing straights with Flow 40's as long as you keep the CATS on so you have enough back pressure and it won't pop like your cooking popcorn in your mufflers..
this is a preference question, and can't logically be answered by anyone.
It's like me asking you what's better: pizza or steak?
I suggest logging onto youtube or mustangexhaust.com and taking a listen to different setups, and make your own choice.
Steak, all the way... no wait, pizza... wait, yea STEAK... no... awww
PERSONALLY, I like the flowmaster 40s. I put the on my v6 (stock cats) and it sounded nice (sounded nicer still after the s/c...) I haven't heard a borla exhaust on a v6, but I like them on a v8, and a lot of people can't really tell the difference between a 6 and an 8, so....
IMO, borla is pricey. They have that million mile warranty on the ss system which is nice, but you could still have that flowmaster system bought and installed twice for the cost of borla. And the stock exhaust tips on borla look like crap, again imo.
Like the great markwondi suggested, look around for some video or sound clips. That'll give you a pretty good idea as to what system you want.

Hi there. I have a 98 V6. I wanted to have my exhaust done and I took it to a performance exhaust place close to me for an estimate. Now mind you this is a very reputable business..they have race cars, they make headers and exhaust for everyone. My boss has a race car and he was the one that recommended them to me. Anyway, what this guy wanted to do to my car was cut out the Y pipe and for the exhaust do 2 inch to the mufflers and then only 2.25 inch from the mufflers back. He wanted to use the Flowmaster 40s..he says I don't need 2.5s on a V6. Reason I ask is because everything you see or read everyone had 2.5 exhaust and H pipes, X pipes, whatever. Does this seem reasonable? Do I need bigger exhaust? What's the benefit of the x pipe and h pipe or is there? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but I really don't know much about modded exhaust and it seems like this guy is off the beaten path if you know what I mean.
Hey man, I am certainly no expert by any far means of the word, but I have 2.5" true dual, no x or h, with magnaflows. It worked great for me, an increase in low end power was noticable, while certainly no decrease anywhere in the powerband occured. Everyone has their preference of mufflers, and from all the exhaust clips on here I cant say there is one I wouldnt put on my car. They all do sound good, just a personal preference on the sound. I hope the guys on here who have helped me before will check me on this, but I believe that once you pinch your exhaust down to say 2", no matter what you open it up to after that it wont make a difference. I certainly dont think 2.25"-2.5" is too big by any means. I asked the first shop that I went to "what can I do to open up the exhaust a little, get a nice tone and maybe get a little performance.", the guy who 1 year earlier had put an exhaust on my v6 ranger said "Buy a V8, your V6 makes too much torque with not enough horsepower too sound good. It will sound weird no matter what you do." And I did exactly what he said not to do, went to another shop and its worked wonderfully. Dont let someone like that take the wind out of your sails man. Its always a good feeling when someone hears your car for the first time and asks you why you took the GT badges off

Thanks BickerC. I still plan to have him do this because he is a good friend of my boss and is hooking me up as a favor to him. I'm just gonna insist on 2.5 exhaust like you guys say. I just didn't know if he knew something we didn't or what...i don't understand all this back pressure/performance exhaust stuff yet. I don't plan on doing any other mods to the motor other than just a CAI and an underdrive pulley. My goal is to come as close as I can to 200 HP and to make it sound a little more like a Mustang.

I'm not pokin' holes in anyone's thoughts, but the guy was on the nose with 2.25 to 2.5. As the gases flow downstream, the 2.25 to 2.5 will cause a vacuum effect, giving you more scavenging. IMO, let the pro tell you what's best. He's not blowing smoke, and he's been doing this much longer than any of us on this thread (just an assumption). My suggestion, listen to the man, he's a pro for a reason. Good luck, it already sounds good!
Wow, I bet it's too late. didn't see the post dates. well, it's kinda driving with an out-of-state plate.... what the ...Oh, Never mind, he's a rookie. lol.
