Red face Just got a bone stock 1996 V6 Mustang. Where do I start?

Well, here is a funny story. Back when I was about fifteen, just barely got my permit and what not I was all into the imports and the civics with b16 engines straight from japan all that jdm fun. Well my grandma had a 1996 v6 mustang for the longest time and when she finally got a new car my mom asked me if I wanted the mustang other than the 2004 r32 that I wanted for a while. I came to think about it the stang had no payments because if I was going to get the r32 id have to pay 230 bucks a month for it. I looked at the positives and negatives and I suggested to take over the stang which I have now. The first time i drove it fell in loves with it and now I have it. I don't really know but i have so much plans for this thing i do not know where to start. Basically my v6 is bone stock with 156k on it but i got new hoses, fuel lines, etc. Just a lot of replacement parts. right now im pushing a whopping 150hp haha well, i was wondering if you guys can get me started on my project. So please give me some suggestions help me out thanks guys.

Chris

to really wake up your ride, gears is the best bang for your buck.

i suggest 3.73(right number?), since they give you good acceleraction, and wont destroy your gas mileage.

also, an exaust sytem helps wiht preformance a little, but adds a nice mean sound, and if you go dual, you get some GT like styling as well.

and a cold air intake is always good.

but more imoprtantly, what do you plan on doing wiht this car?
whats you price range, u have to think of these factors as well.

but welcome to the stanger world

well my plan was exhaust intake porting my headers do some work on the block for sure get new pistons. I was looking on getting gears but Gears and gear ratios is like s different language and i really haven't thought about that yet but i know forsure im going to get new gears. going to cam the v6 new pulleys basically building the motor until i cant build no more then super charge it. I think from there you can see where i am going you know.

Well it sounds like you kind of know what you want to do but your jumpin all over the place. There isn't a list in order of start to finish when it comes to performance upgrades, but there is a general idea of what upgrades come before others some of the time, because with some with some mods you won't see a gain until others are added etc.

A good place to start would be to look at a dual exhaust, an intake, maybe some underdrive pullies (prob not if you plan on adding a supercharger like you said) and maybe a set of 3.73 or 4.10 gears. Thats just throwing some ideas out there. Do a little research into gears because although not giving you more horsepower will definetely get you that kick your looking for.

But lets start with how you see your car when its done and how much money you have to work with as of now and we can help you get started towards your goal...

what i would do is what u said kind of is cod air pullys stage 2 cam single exhaust and a saleen body and a dual exhaust tip and a new set of rims go 1 inch or 2 higher to kept handing hp tire to kept safer at high speedes then i would but this is just me i would twin turbo it cause more people have a supercharger so u need be dirrent than all the other people out there

Another thing too with the supercharger, It's gonna wear more than a turbo will. Also if you want to put a turbo in, you aren't going to use the CAI and the exhaust has to be 2.5"+ for the extra air being taken in. The first thing I would do if I were you is start rebuilding the engine. I have a 1995 3.8L with 144k on it, and that's what I'm doing. Not saying to replace the engine, but renew all the parts, get upgraded performance parts then go get a turbo

Stop right there. Don't post unless you know what you're talking about.

Thanks.

yeah i want to rebuild my whole engine before i drop anything in. Turbos i like a lot, superchargers don't know much about and i wont be turboing it for a while i dont have the kind of money. The reason why i got the v6 is because its more of a project and i can get to know the car more as im building it if i got a gt or a cobra its basically no challenge easily be pushing 300hp. about the gears if i want to throw in new gears what will give me more acceleration and still fast on and off the line??

the gears will give you excellent acceleration of the line. but you will max out your RPM's much quicker than the stock gears. So you'll be extremely fast off the line against an opponent, but around at the top end (depending on which gearing you choose) your opponent will pull on you.

I have a 1997 that was bone stock like yours. In the 1/4 mile made 17.5 first time yeah really slow. Now is doing 15.8 abut the time of the 5.0 stock. Here is what has work for me. Rear end like the other guy said 3.73 track-lock great Diff but kind of short going over 120 MPH, Air intake, crankshaft pulley smaller belive me this will spoon your RPM'S quicker. EMS Chip I have no idea what they did in it but my A/F Ratio is 12.1 and there is not limit at MPH anymore. Dual 2 1/2 exhaust and please use the flow master mufflers beliveme it will make differense in the sound really close to a V8. 56mm TB you can't go bigger than that cuz the intake manifold.
A final adivse the 7.5 rear diff won't handdle to much bit up actully the sun gears can't handdle so if have some extra bucks go and get a 8.8 rear I'm telling you I have blow 2 diff already and I still with the 7.5 but I don't go 1/4 any more. I hope this help
