hey guys. ive been noticing that my engine is letting off a high pitch whine while in 3rd and little bit of 2nd gear. It mostly at higher rpms. do i need a new belt? alternator? im not really sure what to do about it, but dont have the money to take it in to get checked out, its christmas...
what should i look for to know what i need to fix? anything helps. thanks
does it sound like the transmission or engine? If its coming from the tranny then it might be a throwout bearing.

Thinking the same thing..take it to a shop that gives free estimates and have them determine the problem and then we will tell you how to fix it..

well my car is kinda loud, so it might be happening in first and fourth...but i cant really tell.
im really confused about it and im gonna have my friend look at it when he can.
and as for shop that give free estimates and conclusions, i havent found any...so any suggestion for that would help too. i gonna take a close look at it and post what i can figure out tonight.
try some belt dressing if you think it's the belt. it's like $3 a can.
Otherwise, take a look at the belt itself. You can usually tell if you need a new belt or not. A normal wearing belt has cracks in it. if it's missing chunks...then spend the $20 and get a new belt. Otherwise, just try spraying WD-40 or any other lube in the pulleys. That may work...

just from what you have said , it sounds like a tranny problem if its only happening in 1st and 4th.....

Take a long screwdriver, touch tip to different parts on engine...put end of handle in ear. Sound will transmit through the driver. I would start with alternator. You could also take belt off and see if noise goes away at whatever RPM range it happens in. Don't drive it with belt off. Belts are usually a squeal. Use the process of elimination when all else fails...Good luck.

i have same problem!! its fuckin annoying and drawns out my exhaust sounds. i took it to Mr.Transmission to get it checked out and they as well as my school mechanic told me its a bearing in my alternator. mine wines from start all the way to high RPMs.
therefore i believe to eliminate it i need new alternator.
Ok well.. i brought a brand new alternator an replaced it for no reason because it didnt resolve my wining problem.. i have same problem as you its a spinning wine, it's in every gear even wen i rev it in neutral.
let me know where you get on this topic im am really interested, thxs mike.
