Ok, so I'm new at this and was looking for some advise. Im looking to swap out my engine for a 5.4L ford engine. I need to know the details on what all I should change out. Also if anyone here has done it maybe how you've liked it and would recommended it. I'm hoping to do it with in the next 2weeks so I would really appriciate the input. Thank you http://mustangforums.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
ok SO bringing up an old thread here... cuz i want to do the same thing but i have a 98 mustang with the v6... now i dont think it is "not worth it" cuz i think, as a gearhead, that this is gonna be a fun project more than a headache... i personally LOVE the SN95 cars and i really enjoy the new 5.4 motors that come in most trucks nowadays... i have a 5.4 with only like 40k miles on it out of a lincoln town car... not sure if it had the 2v 3v or 4v but i dun really care im not lookin to make a drag car im lookin to be one of the very few that has put a 5.4 in a v6 SN95 car... so for my personal drive, and i can fabricate just about anything i want (even my own K member for the price of the steel alone) if i wanted, i can... and i have the right attitude for it... so there fore i wannna do it, and im willing to bet it can be done with about 4k INCLUDING THE PRICE OF THE CAR... the v6 was only 1000 bucks so inital part of the project and budget already has 1000 bucks into it... but much more to come...the 5.4 WILL RUN and drive for under 4k, it may not be drag race certified but it will do it cuz i know that between me and my dad, i can... SO i will do everything part by part piece by piece junkyards, craigslist, donor parts that ppl just dont want in their garage, etc this project is gonna be pretty cheap... but by the time im done essentially it will be like driving a 2009 mustang with the 4.6 SOHC so i will have a "new" car for like 5k.... and to me, and im gonna change my signature to say this... ITS NOT WHAT YOU CAN BUY ITS WHAT YOU CAN BUILD....

Good luck with the build. Keep tabs of what you had to buy and whatnot as well as difficult steps of the swap and then do a small(or large) write-up when you get done. I am really anxious to see it done. I have been at a drag track where a guy had it done but I did not get a chance to talk to him or anything, just heard that it was there.
why that motor... and what trans do you have for it? stock tranny will deff not hold 350ft t.
if your going for a torque car(since thats a suv motor) why dont you get a diesel. cummins 5.9 lol 6 cyls and i think there is only a few diff things you need to do added on to a gas engine swap. but that sounds alittle outlandish lol
i'd just sell the car bro. go to an auto auction and look around you can find a rebuilt title stang like my 00' for real cheap. the split ports are deff way faster than the previous models.
an if you get a gt you have your work cut out for you. seriously. from what they have said about wiring harness's, ecu programing, tons of other stuff. i'd stick to the same cylinder base.
I hate to agree, but he's right. For the same price, you could supercharge your sixer and make the same if not more power than the stock GT. And plus, you'd have something different than just another plain jane 4.6.
Now that dohc 5.4 is a different story.
ya but why do you think he wants a v8? so he can boost it obviously. haha forced induction is the cheapest way for alot of hp.
i mean sure its expensive....welll....lets say its expensive for people who buy oem and big brand products.
but thats the only reason i'd swap an engine. if i wasnt happy with a v8, lol i'd go for a v10. ahaha. then supercharge that
ok to answer ur questions... lol when i build a project, its not just about budget and performance...
reason 1! first motor i ever built (with my dad) was a 5.4L, AND i have another 5.4L from that time we were building the 5.4L in his van so motor is FREE and only has like 50k on it...
reason2! i love the SN95s and at my age insurance is just ridiculous, so i bought a v6 car (which was about 5000 less than all the others around here and u need a special pass to get into the auto auction around here) and the v6 car was only 1000 bucks...
reason3! on the principle of "its not what u can buy its what u can build" how many ppl can say they made a 5.4L fit in a v6 AND made it perform?? (it will be pretty cool at a car show)
reason4! if it were easy to do, i wouldnt waste my time buying it cuz then there is no appreciation for the TRUE final project...
and finally reason 5!
YES i DO want to supercharge it once i have the money for the kit... but thats not in the budget just yet...

I do not doubt you can do the swap successfully. I highly doubt you will get it done for that budget unless you have a full machine shop at your disposal. One thing that could make the swap easier/cheaper is to find a trashed V8 doner car that will have all the things the V8 cars have that the V6 cars do not. There are a few out there that have done this swap themselves and still spent $10K+ start to finish to get it done and running right. There will be a shitload of parts that must be made and even more that will need to be modified to make it work. Good luck for sure and keep us posted if/when you do this.
lol im buyin the doner car this weekend for 1200-1500 bucks not sure what the guy will accept but that, plus the price of the car is still 2500 or less... that leaves another 1500 to do a stock rebuild to the motor and put it all in... im keeping all receipts in a folder for the v6 as i buy stuff, and i will start keeping receipts (and a bill of sale) for the v8 when i start buying them... ill keep a running total to the penny and take pictures as i go... but i dont see NOWHERE near 10k MAYBE 5k MAYBE but thats just me... my dad said that if i buy a car, any mustang for that matter, he could put a 5.4 in it and make it work for LESS than 3000... sooo ill let u know... he has managed to take a $2000 truck and make it compete with trucks that cost around $50000-$60000 so i dont doubt him at all... again ill keep a running total and ill take pics of all the reciepts lol but im sorry i dont see 10k at ALL...

to answer ur question about tranny im prollly gonna run the T45 in my donor car for a while til i can afford to rebuild it then beef it up a tad from there and run it... again its NOT a drag car it will be a daily driver that makes me smile when i turn the key and fire up the borlas

When I said $10K, I was talking a turn key car that was 110% reliable. I am not saying it is impossible, but you are going to find there are alot of things that make it difficult to do this swap. Believe me, I am very interested to see how things go and you could even sell the V6 stuff off as you remove it to cut down the final total. The cars I have seen with this swap were near flawless showpieces as well when done so if you don't care how things look you stand a better chance as well.
Don't take my statement as anything but opinion and I really do wish you luck and hope you get-er-dun for your price goal.
I think that if you are that skilled as a mechanic you cannot realistically say you are building that car for the cost of the parts alone, the time value/opportunity cost you spend building that car should be considered part of the cost since you could be earning a subsequent billing rate working on another car...

lol well i dont claim to be a mechanic at all just another guy with a hobby and no i dont really care what my frame looks like when i weldin 1/4" plate steel lol it aint there to look pretty, its there to keep my motor from jumpin out the frame rails lol it wont be 110% reliable either, if thats what i was lookin for i would just go to a dealership and finance ya know? but thats no fun if u ask me the car wont be a "hack job" but it aint gonna be gorgeous either... no professional paint, nothin like that all backyard stuff...like i said a hobby but i will post some pics of the "before shots soon" and im gonna take the v6 out and sell it as one piece take the whole 4.6 outta the parts car and sell it as one piece thats about 1000 back toward the project alone... then doors off the parts car i dont need etc etc i have about 80% mapped out as to how i wanna do it and about 98% mapped out about how to budget it alright guys ill keep yall posted

well hey bro no one needs to be professional thats fer sure. i installed a turbo kit within 5 hours and it ran perfectly on my car. then turned around and sold it for basically double of what i bought it for. and for the paint. i've bought 30 dollars of duplicolor fabric/vinyl flat black spray paint, sanded my interior and washed it then sprayed it and its the sexxiest black interior i've ever seen in my life. make sure to take pics dude i wanna see that motor burstin our of the engine bay lol. i'd do a head and belt swap to a 4v also if i were you. just saying for an added 55hp, a 99+ navigator would be yer best bet.
my dad said he was gonna play with the heads to get the car to run 10s i said whoa whoa whoa lol too much but i think the 5.4 came out of an 03' lincoln town car... the limo it was in lol smoked a little bit so they just bought a brand new motor cant have a limo making ANY kind of smoke for the guests and i had about 60 bucks of rattle can on my 87 mustang and it was the best paint job on any of my cars IMO lol but my dad dont like the 4v idea he dont think the ports are big enough, which is true, he and i are old school so im sure he can build big port heads to flow great and produce big numbers with certain cams on em not sure how he is gonna do it but im pretty sure i have the PI block&heads from the 03 i know its newer than a 99 sooo ya it will be pretty cool just need to get my parts car this weekend and build the motor... and we will go from there as far as puttin it in
