Hello All,
Our son's 2000 Mustang 6cyl coupe is having a real hard time shifting.
It is bone stock car - -When I try to pull on the shifter - it seems as if the shifter
handle wants to move but something on/near train is binding.
It is also ODD - when I let the motor run a moment or two - it will shift
but it pretty hard.
So I am starting the research on what I am getting into.
I can handle wrenches on "classic" Mustangs but have not attempted
much on newer Mustangs. I am pretty confident this is a linkage issue and
not a tram issue.
Today I gave a quick shot of WD-40 on the externals of the train - hard to see on
a floor jack - -if I do replace the cable I will put on ramps and stands of course
So here are my questions
1. - Is the cable a simple pull and replace or am I running the risk
of loosing shift points or even an issue with the neutral safety switch.
2. - Is there a chance I will have issues with the shift stops - - I am not certain
how this cable works.
3. - Is there any vacuum associated with the cable - I doubt it but I ask because if
I pull on the shifter with the car running - -it will shift.
4. - I looked at Rock Auto for a cable and there are several - I would like to get
a FOrd cable - but not certain if this is a job for the pros
5. - Any snags I could encounter doing this job"
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions - I do appreciate it
