Default fuel tank question?

Does anyone here on the forum know anything about the fuel tank filler pipe? I have a small leak when I fill up the tank and I was told that the fuel tank grommett and the fuel tank filler pipe would need to be changed out. I know what the grommett looks like but I cant seem to find out what the fuel tank filler pipe looks like??? Is this a part that only the ford dealer has? I am told also that this is somewhat of a common part and I could get it anywhere? Help!

Ok first of all who told you that you need a new filler neck as well. I just went through the same problem. All you have to do is buy the grommet, which is kind of pricey. But its not as bad as having a shop do it for you. Make sure you siphon as much gas out of you tank as you can. Drop the tank. Take the old grommet out and put the new one in. Make sure that you put like WD40 on the new one so the pipe can slide in without tearing it.

The grommet is around $28.00 at the dealers around here...... Take out the 3 bolts inside your gas door, one on the tank holding your filler neck, then the tank straps. You can drop it enough without having to take off all your fuel lines. I use good old axle grease to ensure a better seal, but both work effectively..... Total time is around an hour or so.

Well put shinerstang. And like he said its alot easier if you dont have to disconnect all your fuel lines. I put a jack with something on top of it to hold the tank up.

I have a 01 convertible and am now having the same problem. Thanks for the valuable info on fixing it!! Not a good sign when more than one person has the same problem.
