Exclamation 2006 Mustang V6: Clanking Noise...Need some help.

Hey guys I am new here and I am having a issue with my pony and hopefully you could help me out.
Quote:
I am hearing a clanking noise that appears to be coming from the left rear, now there is no vibration while driving or stopping and it will not always happen. The main time I hear the noise is when I am accelerating and slowing down but if I just let the car coast I don't hear it at all. I have been told it could be the differential but if it was that I am sure I would hear it in both sides and not just the left, and I have also been told that it could be a wheel bearing but then I would likely hear it all the time and have a vibration. I am at a lost here and would like to get it fixed sometime. Thanks in advance guys and hopefully someone could help me out.

PS: It gets louder while breaking if that help the diagnosis. http://www.mustangforums.com/image/s1.gif

Thanks guys!
Again thanks in advance!!!

Have you checked your rotors? I had one once that was so far gone, that it actually broke away from my hub.....

The rear rotors actually appear to be fine but I guess it would not hurt to check them out. But I am wondering why it would be doing it during acceleration as well.

You could have a chipped tooth in your rear, or your u-joints are going. Does it clank from forward to reverse?

Not sure what you mean from forward to reverse, but if its what I think its only when going forward. But as I have said it does not do it all the time, I can go 2-3 days and never hear it. Is there a was to check if its the u-joint and how expensive and how hard are they to replace? Thanks again for the help.

Do you have a 5 speed or auto tranny?

Try jacking up the rear of the car and try so simulate the noise. It could be play in your rear end, driveshaft, or tranny.......

It's a auto and the guy I bought it from just got the transmission rebuilt about 2 months or so before I bought it. And yes I have had it up on a lift and it does seem like the wheels are fairly easy to move not sure if that's normal or not. But the car seems to run great no vibrations nothing just the noise.

that happened to my 95, the front of the rotor looked fine, but the inner part of the rotor was torn up and it was making a clanking noise when driving.

I had a similar issue except mine was a low woooh woooh woooh sound when I took off, it turns out my pads were catching on something. Def check your brake system.

Checked the breaks and seems to be fine, any other suggestions? Again I only notice it when breaking and when I first accelerate, if I let it coast it does not make the sound.

Jack the car up and spin the wheels with it in gear. If there is alot of play in the wheels, try to isolate where the clanking is coming from. Sometimes it is the u-joints, sometimes it is something in the rear end housing.
