My 1996 mustang is rattling (or something may be lose) at idle. It sounds like it is somewhere within my belts or my pulley but I am not quite sure. Once I start accelerating the noise goes away but as I come to a stop and am sitting in idle the noise comes back. When it is placed in park or neutral the rattling does not sound as bad but once it is placed into drive it starts up again. Sometimes it is very loud and other times it will sound normal. What might it be?

Could be your idler pulley these bearings go out once in a while. It could be the clutches on your air conditioner. When it is rattling turn on your air conditioner and see if it quits. Sound travels in funny ways so you may want to check your exhaust also.
