Default how are gears are numbered?

I know that the gears give you more power off the start or at the top end but i dont know how the numbers correspond... could someone please explain?

Thanks

ford gears are usually 2.73,3.08,3.27,3.55,3.73,4.10 and others even more radical than 4.10 but usually reserved for real drag cars .
the 2.73 will have the highest top speed
while the 4.10 will run out much sooner
so long story short as you progress thru the gears 2.73 thru 4.10 your ca will get quicker but drop top speed ..
im sure other guys will have alot more tech stuff on it thats just the the best way i can help you explain it

This has a good explanation of how gears affect speed. Gear ratio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DEFINITELY have a professional do something, if they are not installed precisely you will blow it pretty quick (I've personally experienced it...)
