Default camshaft synchronizer

I've had my check engine light on for a while and had it checked out as being a code for the camshaft position sensor. I finally get around to replacing this part and this is where the fun began.

I got to the sensor and removed it.... and noticed something was missing. The center part of the sensor was missing and the synchronizer metal was all melted and funky looking... the new sensor wouldn't even fit onto the synchronizer. This code has been on for about a year and I have had 0 problems with the way my car runs, but now that I know that this is completely screwed up and not just a bad sensor, I was wondering if the synchronizer was something that is a simple job or if it would be better for me to let an actual mechanic do?

Also, what could/would cause this melting? I read in another thread with someone having this same problem that it could be the wires? I just bought new plugs so should I also get new wires and just change all 4 at one time?

Thanks for all the help.

I think ford had trouble with the taurus also having bad cam sensors. Go to www.Carsurvey.org and check out your car to see if it was a common problem.
