Default 1999 Auto to Manual Swap

Ok, I'm new here so I'd just like to say hi to everyone. But I've convinced myself to do a transmission swap in my 1999 v6. And I know I've heard the autos are faster when built right, but it still can't replace doing it yourself. So I have a few questions, and keep in mind that I have mechanic skills. First, do I have to stick with the t5 or could i upgrade to something like the tremec 3650(just because its a bit stronger I've heard) with the correct bellhousing? And second, do I have to get a manual computer for my car or can it just be tuned to run like a manual? I'd appreciate any info or opinions. Thanks

You would need a manual computer and a tranny from a 99+ being that we have an electronic speedo sensor. You could swap the sensor. There is a writeup on V6power.net on how to do it. Bear in mind, you will throw codes because it is looking for an auto unless you change the harness.

I don't think you can get a 3650 bellhousing, but don't quote me.

I would upgrade the auto with a J-mod and call it a day. It's just less headache, and much, much cheaper......

If you get a T5, get an '01+ they were better tranny's......

Default J-mod

I have the J-mod on my 2002 auto v6 and i absolutely love it. It gives good firm shifts at WOT but still gives nice easy shifts at part throttle. Plus, its pretty inexpensive and fairly easy to do. A little messy yes, but you can get it done in an afternoon. It also gives you a good chance to put in some new tranny fluid and clean it out.

i did a auto to manual swap and i will say that the hardest part of the process is putting the clutch cable in the dash, i never did switch out computers and my car has done fine, but it was a 93 fox so im sure that its computer was not advanced as the 99

That is correct. There were alot of differences between the 2 OBD systems......

i did the swap. the hardest part for me was taking the brake pedal out and putting the clutch pedal assem. in. i never touched my computer because i got a tune from VMP and called it a day. if you have the income i say go for a g0forced t-5 if you plan on boost later.
