Default 1996 Head Gasket Replacement Cost at Mechanic?

Hi everyone, I am currently looking to buy a car. I came across a 1996 Mustang V6 and got in contact with the gentleman selling it. He informed me that he had forgot to put fluid in the radiator recently and the head gasket is cracked now. He is now offering to sell me the vehicle for $1000, bumped down from $1700.

I was curious how much would it cost to replace the head gaskets at a mechanic because I do not have the tools or know how in replacing head gaskets.

Thanks guys.

How's it going man?

Head gaskets aren't an easy nor cheap fix unfortunately. And the mere fact that he "forgot" to put antifreeze in the radiator should be a tell tale sign of abuse. First of I recommend you look elsewhere, there are plenty great deals around here, being that you're in camp pendleton I can help you find a specific car you're looking for. I'm about 20 minutes away.

But, if you're absolutely set on this car, a head gasket fix can range from $1500-$2000 dependent upon how bad the blowout was, the quality of the shop, and legitimacy of the price the shop is trying to give you. I really recommend though, staying away from the car though. Since it blew a head gasket, the other gaskets, mainly the intake manifold gaskets will be prone to blowing out as well, and the entire cooling system would be in jeopardy of failing.

Good point. Thanks for the advice. I really am just looking for something affordable, under 2 grand for my girlfriend to get to and from work. That way I won't have to worry about her while I'm out deployed in the coming months.
