Default Mustang in park won't rev past 4000

Hi there I've found a mustang that i'd like to buy. Seems ok, it's a manual v6 2000.

When sitting in park, I was going over the car, I decided to give it a good rev, and noticed that it didn't rev past 4000 on the dial (I think the red is around 8000? 4000 is half way. I can't remember so that might not be accurate at all.

It drove the car and put my foot to the floor in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, probably got it up to around 100km and it got up there fine.

But when its in park it doesn't go past 4000 (about half way on the revs counter at about 12 o clock if I remember. It gets to 4000 in park and pop! pop pop! pop pop. like its stuck there and can't go any further.

This isn't majorly important to me, i'm not going to sit at the lights, revving my engine like a chump. But I'd like to understand why it's doing it / whats causing it and if it's likely to lead to anything major before I buy. Is this issue likely to be expensive to fix (it doesn't really impact driving although I havn't really got the revs too high to test).

The car drove great it picked up speed real good and felt very responsive while driving. also it has about 46 thousand klicks on it

some cars are limited in neutral or park to prevent overrevving. i had a 95 SHO Taurus and it would only rev to 2600 in park. if it revs higher under load i wouldn't sweat it. sort of like turbos not boosting without the engine being under load...

Welcome to the site!

That is completely normal, its just the rev limiter. If you buy a tuner, you can adjust the rev limiter to where you want it...

Thanks guys. That's great to hear.

The cars marked as salvage which sucks a bit. But it drives so great and has 49k on it (low mileage for 2000). It has been in a ditch before. It's immaculate though, at least seems to be. I think this is why it is so cheap at $6000

I think in 2002 it needed a new transmission, clutch, and a bunch of other things. Then in 2007 it went into a ditch with front and rear bumper damage. I think that's why the kit was put onto it and painted it has a cobra kit, but it's not a cobra. Including cobra steering wheel and seats. The cobra badges are on the sides etc, it's been taken care of, hopefully! it passed the safety etc I know that i'd have more trouble selling it in the future, however I plan on keeping it for 5 or 6 years so if I do that it'll only be worth 1000 or 2000 by then probably, or there abouts - so it won't really face any checks. And as long as it's done me good over that time I wouldn't feel bad about selling it as is.

I'm trying to get a loan for it worried they are going to check the vin though, but i'm not sure if they will check - if I don't secure the loan on the car (I think there's slightly higher interest on a loan not secured on a car). Other option is line of credit I might apply for that instead, no idea what the interest will be like on that but then they definitely won't check the vin as I can do what I want with a line I think.

mine was rear ended as a rental, thats where the gt bumper/duals came from and it was a salvage.

funny thing, i actually got mine at 48500 miles for $6000.

anyways the car has served me well considering how bad i beat it up. just take care of it and be sure to have a detailed list of work done.
