Default Mustang Vs. Camaro

Hey everyone I need a little bit of advice. I have a 2000 Mustang and just recently started taking a lot of interest in the racing world. The only thing done to my car so far is dual Magnaflow Catback exhaust. Getting to the point, recently there was a guy at school who wants to race me. He has an automatic 90's (don't know the exact year) Camaro with the exact same engine as mine (3.8), however he has 3.73 gears in his and his is an automatic. Could I take this guy with pretty much my car being almost stock, or is there anything relatively inexpensive to put on my stang to beat him with?

I think it would be a drivers race. The gears and auto will get him off the line alot quicker. If you can get some gears too, that would help alot. Maybe a CAI and some UDP's to help out more on the HP numbers.

Put some gears in her and you'll have a better chance at a win. Depending on his tranny if it's good and getting old you could be him.

What are you looking to spend in parts?

Would you reccomend 3.73's or 4.10's? Like I said I'm still fresh to the racing world haha, CAI I'm not aware of, and UDP is Pulley's right?

Hmmm ok, well I know he has some kind of thing in his car that lets him start out in second gear and he told me he can get up to 80 at that point so I'm pretty sure he has a good tranny, but I could probably spend up to $1000.

just go with the 4.10's unless of course you drive on the interstate a long way everyday...

with $1000 i would get,

3.73s installed,
cold air intake,
and the underdrive pullies, should be able to pull that off with $1000

and he just has a second gear start button which, isnt really all that, and certainly not good for racing,

im sure you could beat him as long as you hit all of your shifts, but the gears would definitely nip it in the bud

Ok, cold air intake was definitely one of the next steps on my list. I was also looking at getting MAC Longtubes to give her a lil more growl, but how much will that do for my HP, if all that much?

If you have the cash, get 3.73 gears, a T-Lock and a tuner like an SCT3. That'll run about $900, but you will see at least 12-15 rwhp, and about the same torque. The gears will get you into the powerband quicker which means harder launches, as well as the T-Lock which puts power to both wheels. Thats about the best $900 you can spend, and you'll smoke that bow tie

yikes. this would be a neck & neck race for sure. those 3.8L camaro's are a nuisance to a 99-04 V6 mustang even in stock trim. you have your work cut out for you for sure. i highly agree with everyone who has recommended gears and a t-lock. i think 3.73's would let you crawl away from him, and 4.10's to blow his doors off.

does he have a locking differential? count your lucky stars if he doesnt, he'll just fry the hell out of the RR tire. if he does have a locker, i hate to say he will most likely walk away from you with your current mods.

either way, good luck... are you guys gonna race on a 1/8th or a 1/4th?

Everyone is ether saying 3:73 or 4:10.
But what type of tranny do you have?
That is a KEY factor to your gears depending if you have a manual or auto
