Default Boost Maximum for a Stock Bottom End?

What is the highest "safe" boost pressure for a 99-3.8 stock bottom end?

I hate to answer questions with questions, but I'm kind of curious what your think about doing.

Turbo, Supercharging, Nitrous.....

Because there are big differences in cylinder pressures, in addition to when and how the boost comes about. This is important to how strong a bottom end needs to be.

In general terms, the 99+ is pretty strong. It is playing it pretty safe if you keep the boost under 8 pounds. This gives you a little room to play around with tuning. With proven tuning and fuel management right out of the box, 12 pounds is workable, but you better have everything dial in right from the start. Without getting into a real high dollar bottom end components, I have seen a few push upwards of 16 pounds with Turbos.

Hope this helps

Thumbs up

Glen, Thanks for replying. ATI has a new supercharger out for the V6 that looks promising and is an easy install (according to them anyways).

Like glenn said, its about cyl pressures, not necessarily boost. Even with 8psi if you don't have your timing and fuel right you can do damage, with 12psi it just becomes more finicky. You can run 10-13psi on a stock bottom end, I know people doing it, though 13 is pushing it. Once you hit around 10-12psi you pretty much NEED an intercooler because temps get so high that you have to pull lots of timing.

Yeah, I got the "it's real easy" speach from a guy who sold me a carberator rebuild kit for quadrajet 4 barrel carb once.

My advice would be the following:

Superchargers aren't super tough. Just make sure you have an extra vehicle to make tool runs. And find out how late the parts store stays open You will aquire a few new tools during the install that you never thought you would see in your tool box. Have patience doing the install. Better to have the car sit until it's done right then to rush.

If they say it takes 6-8 hours to install, you better plan on a full weekend. Try to have a buddy who is mechanically inclined to help. Lastly, don't break out the beer until your done

Have fun

You can run more boost with an intercooler, the ATI kit's been around for a while. The H.O. kit comes with the intercooler, injectors, etc needed to run the 11psi it pushes.

If you're running a Vortech, without an intercooler, I'd run 7psi max, and 8 with extreme caution.

If you're running a T-Bird SC unit, you're not going to be able to run as much, since the boost comes mainly at lower RPMs.

So, like Glen says, it depends on the type of boost.
