Default 2000 Mustang 3.8L Chirping/Screeching

Have been getting intermittent chirping/screeching noise from the front of the engine. Sometimes is just at startup and goes away, sometimes comes and goes while driving. Have looked at the belt, it looks to be in good shape. The pulleys are straight, I don't see where the belt may have rubbed against a pulley either. I have used a long metal rod placed on each rotating assembly and the noise is not amplified through the rod. I have read on some other Q&A post that it could be caused by the Cam position Sensor.

I has 104K miles, its' an automatic. All inputs welcomed.

Thanks for the response BIG G. Is this a simple remove and replace issue or is there something that can bite you if not careful? By that I mean alignment or timing issues? Any special tools required? I used to do some of my repairs, but it has been a long time since I have gotten my hands greasy. Should I let some one else with knowledge tackle this.

Well, finally changed out the synchronizer (had a mechanic friend do it). Chirping gone, wife very happy now. The old unit would barely spin by hand. Don,t know when it would have failed completely and left us stranded somewhere, but imagine that it would not have been too long. So if anyone out there has one chirping, don't wait too long to replace it.
