I'll be traveling around 70 on the highway and when I floor it to downshift, it will downshift into 3rd. But right after it does, the rpms will go from like 4000 to like 3000-3500. Why is this? It's only with a 4-3 downshift. It's an auto by the way. Can anyone help?

does it feel like its bogging down or hesitating? as if its engine-related?
it may just be the TCC locking up. try turning OD off.
Somewhat, ill floor it, and it'll downshift to 3rd at around 4000 but then immediatly drop to like 3500. I know it might be a bad description, but I was just wanting to know why it was doing it.

I've heard a flush can be damaging to the tranny in some cases. Is this just bad speculation?
nah i do them all the time. some shops use special additives to clean out the tranny, i'd stay away from that, they can harden seals and things like that... but other than that, its just a machine that hooks up 2 lines to the tranny and pushes ALL the old fluid out and replaces it with new atf.
the shop i work at is supposed to use those kinds of additives, most us just dump that sh** out, that stuff is essentially just brake-clean.

As usual, thanks a lot bro

My 96 V6 does that same kind of thing. Not sure why? I had the fluid replaced last summer and it stopped the shudder as it shifted into OD. It is def not engine related.

Only time you have to worry about an ATF flush causing damage to the trans is if the fluid has not been changed. Like 100K miles never been changed.
Are you sure what your describing isnt just the load from the car being placed on the tranny once it actually gets into 3rd gear?
Well I just inspected my tranny fluid and it's red. A darker shade of red, but still red. You don't think a tranny flush would do any damage at this high mileage?
And I guess it could be the load...

a trans flush should be safe for your tranny, if the fluid looks ok, i dont see a need to flush it out just yet. as for the rpm drop, see if you can drive another auto v6 mustang and compare them...
have you tried it with OD on/off ? i think its the TCC locking up, like its supposed to.
