2003 V6: problems with Dynomax Hey guys and gals. I wanted to put a quick story out there so, in the future, when people search for things like "Dynomax exhaust" (like I did months ago) something comes up.
In the middle of February, I ordered a cat back system for my 2003 V6. I'd read all the posts about how you don't want to lose much back pressure. I'd watched several videos on YouTube where people's exhausts ended up sounding like glass packs on an old truck. So I decided on a Dynomax kit. It was fairly conservative. It was priced right.
SEVEN weeks later, the system arrived at my house. The "estimated shipping date" on the Summit website changed THREE times. According the Summit, Walker/Dynomax (a member of Tenneco Inc.) just wasn't shipping the product to them.
I was pretty excited so I got to work on it right away. With one cut, the stock exhaust came out. I mounted the Y (intermediate) pipe and everything looked good. Same for the muffler on the driver's side. I tried to mount the passenger side muffler and it wouldn't fit!!!
They're all a slip fit, right? One side is 2.5" OD and the other 2.5" ID, right? The classic male -> female connection, right? WRONG. No big deal. Somebody grabbed the wrong piece to weld on there in their factory. I just put it in my back pack and drove the motorcycle to a muffler shop and had them expand the pipe a bit.
Then I'm back at the house and I got the tailpipes out of the box. Lordy, lordy...I would imagine a four year old could make better mandrel bends. They even applied their UPC stickers to the pipes on parts that had REAL ugly bends. If there was ever a performance gain to using mandrel bends instead of pinch bends, it was lost in their poor craftsmanship.
So, now that I've ranted enough, it's on there. It's not obnoxiously loud. It isn't noisy inside either. The seat of my pants tells me there's just a bit more torque at the top end. Just beware if you wish to put Dynomax mufflers and/or exhaust on your car!
