Default SS Lines Stripped Bolt Obsolete Part

This past weekend I was changing my brakes for some Brembo slotted rotoes, Hawk HPS pads, and Russell Stainless Steele lines. When I was just about all done with the enitre job, I rounded the flange bolt on the steel brake line that connects to the OEM brake hose when removing it from the front left wheel. I think the flange bolt on the line cold welded.

Anyways, I needed to replace the steel line that goes from the front left wheel housing to the hub in front of the master cylinder. After the parts lady at Ford ordered the wrong part we found the right part # today. She told me the part is "obsolete" and Ford no longer sells it, but she could still order it from thier vintage parts delear that has it avaliable. I was really suprised to hear that, and I asked what would happen if somebody had a front end wreck and needed that part. She said it could be ordered from the Vintage dealer in Wisconsin or one would have to be bent and made by the mechanic (that's all it is, is about a 12" long piece of bent stainless steel line). So the part should be in tomorrow, so I can finish the project.

Word of advice if removing the old rubber OEM lines for Stainless steel lines: make sure you use a flare nut wrench and not a box end wrench to loosen the lines, or the end may get rounded if it was put on too tight.

3 of the 4 lines disconnected with ease. I believe I know the cause of the iussue, as the front of my car was wrecked before I bought it about 6 years ago. I could tell because there are a bunch of welds on the frame, and shipping labels on parts with dates newer than the car manufacture date. My guess is the line I rounded was a replacement part and was tightened wayyyy too tight by the mechanic. Even after I disconnected the stainless line and runner brake hose assembly from the car, I still couldn't separate the 2.

A detailed parts list for the Mustang would be nice. There are some online catalogues showing parts, but they only cover the bigger items on the car and not the more in depth smaller stuff. It appears the dealer is the only place that has diagrams and part numbers for that stuff.

You can make your own out of brakeline and compression fittings for about $10.00......

He's right. Your local NAPA could have sold you the pre-flared line and fittings for about $20 or so.

Well interestingly enough that is exactly what I ended up having to do. The part Ford kept ordering was the wrong one, and it took them 3 days to figure out that the brake line is no longer made.

It took me another 3 days to create a good line from scratch to replace the exsisting line. I got a pipe cutter, pipe bender, and double flare tool from Harbor Freight.

One of the challanges with making the line is that one side was a bubble flare and the other was a double flare and there were (2) different bolt fittings too, so finding one at NAPA or anywhere else exatly was not happening.

What I did was get the fittings I needed 1st from different lengths sold and cut them to take off the fittings. Then I used a line that had a bubble flare on each end and cut off one end. I then slipped on the appropriate fittings and created a double flare on the cut off end. Getting that double flare right was not easy. I must have done about 25 flares (test and not) before I got one I felt mostly comfortable putting on the car. Then I re-bent the line and put it back on the car. I mage a lot of rookie mistakes.

I have bled the system and driven the car about 50 miles with no problems. I thought about getting this line from a junkyard to have a back-up but I only found 1 out in Oregon, and the guy wanted $50!

My line should be good to go. This is a good thing to note for other Mustang owners; if one of those lines needs replaced there will probably be no ordering them new from the dealer. You will have to make one or have it made for you.
