Default 1996 Convertible Gas Leak

We just brought a, new to us, 1996 V6 convertible home on a trailer. It has been sitting for about two years. On the way home, we attempted to fill the tank and at about the 13 gallon mark fuel began to pour out of the tank where the filler neck connects to the tank. Is this common and what are we looking at to effect a repair? Thanks in advance... Rob.

Its a fairly common problem. The first time I filled up my used 1996, gas was leaking just as described. I can't remember the part number, but I bought the rubber grommet from the dealership, about $30 or so.

Basically, I carefully lowered the gas tank a little bit, and loosened and/or removed the bolts holding the fill neck. A little bit of wiggling to remove the fuel neck from the tank and carefully pulled the old grommet out, careful not to drop any pieces in the tank. I then reinstalled the new grommet in to the gas tank hole, replaced the neck and tightened everything back up.

Its been a while, it was one of my first projects, I can't remember if there were any more important details, but thats the gist of it.

Thanks! It looks like the part number is F4ZZ-9072-DA. Seems like a simple fix. I'm sure it won't be the last thing we find on this diamond in the rough.
