Default Mechanical to electronic speedo swap, possible?

I'm wondering if it's possible to swap a mechanical speedo, like from my 1997 Mustang, for an electronic speedo, like from a 1999 to 2004 Stang. I know that my transmission is wired for mechanical, please don't remind me. This is an attempt to dump this tranny and update.

Also, is there any way to, say, upgrade the V6 speedo to the 180mph Cobra speedo and correct the speed? Please don't tell me it's ridiculous or unneccesary; I need a practical answer, not an opinion.

Thank you.

Electronic speedos are monitored by the PCM, so it will not work without a ton of changes, like harness, computer, etc. You can change the tailshaft speed sensor back over to mechanical on the new tranny and just ditch the electronic sensor.....

Not sure on the cluster.......

Thanks for the info!

Do you believe it would work if I got the ECU, etc. from a 1999-2004 V6 and just got a chip or programmer to account for the Cobra speedo?

I'm planning on using the SSM 4.3L stroker V6 with the t-56 tranny and m-112 supercharger adaptions with an upgraded 03-04 Cobra M-112 supercharger. I'll run an electronic speedo and tranny set-up if possible, hopefully with a late model tr-6060 for the higher torque cap.

I know some t-56s are mechanical, but all of the newer ones, including the tr-6060s, are electronic. The newer ones also handle more torque, so it's better overall.

And I just looked at it: the Cobra only goes to 160, but it's got a deeper redline(something I may or may not need).

Why wouldyou want to go through all that mess in order to put an electronic speedo in your car?

Here is my suggestion:

A TKO 500 or 600 is more than you'll ever need for an M112 setup. It has a mechanical speed sensor which will bolt right into your current tranny and the bellhousing bolts right up to your current motor. You will just need a flywheel and clutch kit. As far as the speedo itself, programming it will not help at this point unless you are going to change your car completely over to a 99+ V6 platform in regards to wiring. The Cobra harness is completely different. Yes, the redline is different, and reaching or targeting your motor build to match your redline on a tach is not the best way path to take.....

Just my $.02

Thanks, Shiner!

But I don't understand why you didn't just say that in your first post; it's a very practical answer...

Now I'm off to find a write up on "auto to manual swaps"... haha

1. It was early in the morning, and I only had a couple minutes before work.
2. I wasn't sure where you were going with your mods.
3. Some people just like to throw a cluster in there for the looks.
4. It was early in the morning.....

Ahh-haha I see. I don't really care for the looks of a six speed. I don't care for the looks of a V8 either.

V6s and five-speeds are simpler, yet just as capable...

I'm kinda on the fence about the whole "auto to manual" thing. I hear it's just as exciting to drive auto as it is stick after you drill the valve body. And some days I know I wouldn't want to bother with shifting a manual... haha
