Default when buying an engine, what do you need?

when buying an engine block wheat else do you need? ive heard stuff like harness and such but what else?..assume that i have just the engine bay and nothing at all but a whole wanting some pony power

then you need everything, block, heads, camshafts, pistons, crankshaft, etc. etc. etc.

unless you buy a crate engine. then all of it comes.

you realize that buying an entirely new engine is expensive...hopefully you've got some money.

that is an extraordinarily vague request.. in order to get a complete list youd have to tell us what exactly youre trying to build because for example over-head valve v8's are extraordinarily different than over-head cam v8's..
