Default motor swap 3.8 to 4.6

i have a 4.6 and i was wondering if anyone has a list of parts that needs to be changed when doing a motor swap from the 3.8 to the 4.6

to be honest it nots worth it if its a 2v but if its a cobra or mach 1 4v engine then it might be worth it if your willing to do all the work, long story short its more trouble than its worth, if you want the v8 then sell your car and the v8 engine and buy a gt and you would be saving money and a lot of time. but if you are really dead set on swapping then im sure someone on here can give you a decent how to...

Buy a GT that needs a motor and install it in that. Far too many parts needed and work involved to put a 4.6L V8 in.

To answer the question posted by the OP:
Engine, wiring harness, computer, transmission, rear-end, fuel system, suspension, gauge cluster. Basically, you need a whole donor car.

My son has a 1997 Mustang with a 3.8L V6 and were thinking of swapping out with a 5.0 from a 1987 Lincoln Town Car, all components are working on this donor car. How much modifing will have to be done to the motor mounts, transmission mounts ect.? The car already has shorty headers, Magnaflow exhaust and cold intake air system-What more can be done to get more power out of the V6?

You'll have to do a lot of modding. Swapping a 5.0 into a 94-95 is not too much work but a 96-98 is a lot of work. The k-member is different IIRC.

does anything beside the motor mounts needs to be changed in the 99, like K-member and tranny mounts or anything

He already answered this... Yes, you need a new K-member.

i personally wouldnt do the swap, and dont have the knowledge on everythin you would need to change. If you have plenty of money, and are looking for a challenge, y dont you modd your 6. They can be made plenty fast, and with the money you will spend swapping the motor, your v6 will be faster than the 8.

Chances are we probably do not know... we are sixxers. It is very annoying to us when people ask us about V8 swaps. For whatever reason, we bought a V6: so we sweat over it, mod it, and love it. For someone to come in asking how to get rid of the very thing we enjoy, and "just swap in an 8"... we take it kinda personal. My apologies if I sounded curt... But we get this same question almost every other day...

But like most of us say, it will cost less time, money, and effort to:
1) keep the V6 and mod it
2) sell the V6 and buy the V8
Engine swaps are not cheap & easy, like everyone seems to think. I think b1lk1 said it best: "find a GT body and drop in the 4.6"

If you're still set on swapping the 4.6 into the 99 LX body, I would try to find specs of the GT body to see if there are any differences, check here: Ford Online Parts - Factory Replacement Ford Parts Supplier It seems there are at least different motor mounts...

To SiverJ and all die-hard sixters
You are correct in everything you have said about engine swaps. I'am one of those those that asked that same question that you took offense to; there was none meant and I hope none taken. But in my question was also included on how to inprove performance on the V-6. I have included what modifications are on the engine now and maybe you could enlighten me with a few more! By the way I have a 87' GT and a 65' coupe also,so as you can tell I LOVE MUSTANGS!!!
Thanks for any help you can give me.

well you could do alot of things.. anything from getting a tuner, to doing a windstar intake swap, to porting & polishing intakes and heads, to getting gears and/or a limited slip differential.. u could get a cam, do a stroker kit, turbocharge it, supercharge it.. theres alot you could do to it

EDIT: actually you cant do windstar intake since its single port.. in that case u would have to do both a split port and windstar intake swap all at once how serious do u want to get?
