Hello, I just bought a CB Radio for my car... I'm really not sure why, it was an impulse buy. anyway... I mounted it and the antenna and hooked it all up and I grounded the negative wire and now I just need to hook up the positive end. I've heard you can hook it directly up to the battery but the wire isn't long enough so thats out. I would like to hook it up through the fuse box but I'm not sure where. Hahaha funny story, I actually just picked a fuse stupidly and I chose the high beams fuse so the thing only worked when I had my high beams on hahahha. I just want to know what fuses are safe to hook it up to and which ones to stay away from and also how to connect the wire, I've mananged to get it in there but it keeps slipping out.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Reason: spelling
i thought i was the only one with a CB radio in my 'stang !!!
if your car does not have traction control, behind your shifter bezel there will be a connector that doesnt go to anything. however, that connector still has 12v and ground going to the connector. and the connector is already protected by a fuse. the connector only provides 12v with the key on. i used that connector. my antenna is mounted inside my car, and my radio is mounted inside my glovebox.
another cool thing you can do, if you have a glovebox light, you can hook into that, and mount your radio inside the glovebox; that way, your radio will turn on when you open the glovebox, and turn off when you close it.
if your radio is a cobra, it has an inline fuse on the positive wire already.
if you remove your bezel, you'll see the connector that just sits there (note i have my 12v/grnd wires tapped in)
the red wire is tapped into the 12v, and grnd is tapped into grnd, this is how the connector is set up:
and this is where my antenna is mounted, it has a magnetic base, and mounts to the rear package tray. what i love about my setup, is that there is literally, no visible wiring. 12v/grnd wires run straight into the glovebox, and the antenna wiring runs under my seat, under my sill plate, behind my kickpanel, and into the glovebox. nobody knows you have the wierd contraption unless they open the glovebox or try to sit in the backseat.
aaand on another note, this thing actually serves a cool purpose, last weekend i went on a road trip to orlando and got a little lost thanks to my friend's crappy directions...and i used my radio to ask truckers on the interstate for directions! lol. sure beats stopping at a gas station..
hi, your set up is pretty sweet, i'll show you mine once i get it all together... I pulled off my bezel and I found the plug lookin thing that goes to nothing... were do I put the ground and positive wires though, there's like 5 different ports?
yeah, all you have to do is insert the wires, and when you plug the connector back into the bezel, it will hold the wires in place so they dont fall out.
and btw, dont expect stellar range if you do end up installing your antenna inside the car. i get about a half mile on the open highway.
obviously you'll get way more (up to 4-5 miles) if the antenna is mounted outside the car, but theres no way in hell i will ever mount an antenna to my roof lol... it'd look way too goofy/ghetto, plus it might scratch the paint.
and our trunks are composite materials, so the magnetic base antennas wont mount there.
do you have a cobra radio?
cuz if you do, you dont even have to hack up your glovebox to mount it in there.
if you look at the glovebox when it's open, you'll see the 2 stop tabs that hold it from opening too far (anyone who's ever replaced a cabin filter in a newer car will know what im talking about).
squeeze the sides of the glovebox so that the tabs will clear, and then the glovebox will open up all the way. you'll see a groove on each side of the glovebox behind the stop tab.
you can take the antenna & mic wires and push them into those grooves, and that will hold your radio in place.
yeah mine set up is pretty different... I have an aftermarket center consol area so mounted the radio and mic on the side where the shifter bezel is. So its pretty much mounted sideways right next to my right knee and I mounted my antenna on the driver side of my trunk... I admit it looks pretty lame and stupid but it work hahaha. I didnt like the look of it on the roof and i wanted the range so I had to settle for the rear fender area. hahaha I attached some pictures if you wanna check it out.
your set up is pretty smart though, I like it. I was looking for a place to mount everything and I didn't even think of the glove box... Its like a secret little radio like in james bond or something hahahaha. Thats pretty sweet.
i have my old ipod sitting in my glovebox hooked up to my stereo by wire that runs behind everything.. people always wonder why my radio plays such good music all the time lol.. 232-k7 just has voices speaking to him from his glovebox hahaha
kinda sorta an irrrevlent question but i have a XM satalite radio with the car kit, i think the antenna that i have to use with it doesnt look good and i was wondering if anyone knows if i can "fuse" my XM antenna with the antenna already on my car? thanks for the advice in advance

hahaha yeah I used to have my ipod playing from my glove box... then my dog ate the cable hahahah so its back to CDs for me haha.
As for the XM radio question, I've never heard of anybody ever not using the XM antenna but hey a lot of things are possible.... you should ask someone who specializes in auto electronics. As you can probably guess from my intitial post that I don't know to much about electronics. hahahhaha
