Default Changing my idle?

Somebody told me that if i slowed my idle down to around 400 rpms that i would save gas and i would get a lower rumble while idle. has anyone ever done this or even think it is credible?

My 95 idles at 500, i wouldn't take it lower than that. You'd need to change it on the computer anyways... What does urs idle at??

theres no way you can do it without buying a tuner.. 400 is pretty low.. i wouldnt go that low.. it would in theory save gas if youre idling alot i dont think its completely necessary though

agreed! u'd definitely need a tuner... and there's really no point to having ur idle that low... you're not gonna save enough gas to notice it in your wallet

i idle around 6-700 rpm. i was reading that you would have to change the tps voltage, which is something i have never done. would it really give me more of a lower rumble. that was the reason he said i should lower my idle. i was also wonderin how much it would affect the sound of my car if i put tail pipes on it? my set up is stock headers, cats, divorced mid pipes to the mufflers.

Yup, you should idle around 700 rpm. Changing the idle might make it a little deeper, but you could also choke out your engine if you set it too low (and try to stomp on it). And really, how often are you sitting at idle?

If you're thinking about like car shows or at a red light... there may be other ways of achieving the sound you're after -- do you want louder or deeper or both? Is it true you have an aftermarket exhaust of true duals? If so, you should sound pretty good already But an H-pipe would probably give you a "lower rumble" than the true duals do.

Also, what year is your Mustang?

yea its after market. the only part that is stock is from my headers to the downstream O2 sensor.. after that there is nothing but 2 pipes going to 2 mufflers. the shop told me that the mufflers were the same thing as flowmasters. im not sure of the brand, but they are chambered mufflers. i def dont need to be any louder. im just worried that a h pipe and tail pipes will make it to quite, but i also think i would benefit in the power department.

Your alternator might not charge as well at 400 rpm

Wow this is a new one......

Well I would think if making the car idle at 400 rpm would improve fuel economy and not have any major side effects, then Ford would have set and programmed the computer to idle at 400 rpm.

I suggest leaving it alone, Ford has damn good electronics, no sense undoing something they spent years upon years of testing and previous experience perfecting.

Yeah, a CAI will make it a little bit louder. Not really noticeable unless you romp on it. And if you wanna add just a little more volume (for cheap), you could always add a resonator exhaust tip. I have one on mine, and it kinda gives it a mellow, medium loud noise at WOT. It's not a roar like a real exhaust, but it's enough to turn some heads -- and then the rims take over from there.
