Default tranny will not go intp drive

my friend drove a 94 mustang auto to my place and gave it to me.
but it will not go into drive ??
it goes into 1, 2, N and R but no drive.
could the problem b that the shift cable or linkage is stretched or wrecked?

im thinking if the cable is shot, move the selector to n now move it forward it wont go without the use of the button.but it will go back without useing the button, if it takes up a gear .this is drive,it may not line up with the letter d as the cable is out of adjustment.it maybe 1 you cant find.
