Default How do i take tension off engine belts?

I have a 2002 mustang v6 and the alternator went out. I'm by no means a mechanic or in any way "car smart" but I figured out everything else that I need to do except how to take the tension off the belts to actually remove the alternator. Can anyone tell me the secret of how to take the tension off the belts?

thanks

welcome to the pages!

magic wand/easy button

on the front of the engine is a pulley, connected to an arm. a ratchet pulling the back of the pulley inward of the belt will loosen it..

look on your sticker for idler pulley or tensioner and loosen it up

not the front of the pulley and not the bracket the BACK OF THE PULLEY

Thanks. My Dad was trying to tell me over the phone how to do it but I couldn't figure it out.
