Default 2000 Mustang transmission hard to put in gear

First off, I just joined today. I'm glad to be on board! I have a 2000 Mustang v6 automatic transmission with 44 thousand miles. I haven't driven it in several months, but put it back on the road this week. When putting it in gear, the shift lever is very hard to move. In order to get it into drive, I usually have to go past D to 2, and push it back up to get it to engage. It feels like the linkage needs lubricating or something along those lines. The transmission fluid level is fine. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I do most of my own work, but try to stay away from transmissions. Is this something I can do myself?

Oh Snap. I hadn't even thought of that. I have chipmunks and trees with nuts all around where the car has been parked. I'll be checking on that kind of obstruction and letting you know what I find. Thanks for pointing out the obvious to me!

I had the same thing happen with my 2001 v6. The cable (linkage) between the shifter and the transmission had become rusted/corroded at the transmission end and had to be replaced. Works great now.
