Default P0402 EGR Issue, Safe to Drive?

Hi Guys,

Just went to get some groceries and while driving my check engine light came on. I have a basic ODB-II scanner and got code P0402. Seems fairly simple to fix.

My question is, not knowing much about this stuff is it safe to drive? I have a 4 hour highway drive for work tomorrow and just don't wanna do it if its not
recommended.

Thanks for any advice!

OK, I literaly just went through this on my F-150. I drove with the light on for several weeks. You might see a slight decrease in gas mileage and your idle might not be as good as it was before, but you shouldn't hurt the engine.
EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) diverts some of the exhaust gas back through the intake system to reclaim some of the unspent fuel in the exhaust stream.
You can try cleaning the throttle body with TB cleaner. On my F-150, I had to remove the TB and get my hand down into the intake manifold to clear two small ports on the bottom inside corner of the intake elbow. They were completely crusted over with carbon, cutting off the air flow from the EGR valve. I'm not sure how the EGR valve ties into the intake on the Mustang. I haven't looked. Also check the hoses to make sure you don't have a vacuum leak. If you need to replace anything (after cleaning) try the EGR valve. If that doesn't take care of the problem, it could also be the EGR sensor, but that's the last thing I'd try replacing.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.

the egr valves purpose is to control the combustion chanbers temp by diluting the air fuel mixture with inert gases. this helps cool and evens out the temperature inside of the cylinders and combusion chambers.

My definition of what the EGR system does probably isn't the best. This is the best explanation of the EGR system's purpose I've been able to find:

+1

recirculating spent gasses into the intake lowers the temperature of the combustion chamber, mainly to reduce the formation of N0x, which is a pollutive gas that forms above 2,000 F.
