Default 3.8 rear main seal

Does the crank shaft need to be lowered to replace a rear main seal on a '92 3.8? Planning on removing the engine to replace all gaskets and want to know if I need any specialized tools.

depends on whether its a 2 or 1 piece seal. If its 2 pieces you have to remove the oil pan and bearing cap, 1 piece you have to remove the tranny.

Since I'll have the tranny removed from the engine while it's out, I should have easy access to the seal. Do I need any special tools or is it just a rubber or rubber / steel type press-in seal?

no special tools, just sockets and possibly some drywall screws drilled into the seal if its a 1 piece to pull it out.

Careful not to get any metal shavings in the engine
